Biography
Beggars Banquet is excited to release the new solo album by Stuart A. Staples. Leaving Songs will be released on June 6th, 2006.
Leaving Songs is a collection of tracks written over the last year and includes some of Stuart's strongest since Tindersticks' “Curtains”. With the potential to create something very special, Stuart headed for Mark Nevers' (Lambchop) studio in Nashville, accompanied by Dave Boulter, Neil Fraser and drummer Thomas Belhom. Further sessions at Lucky Dog studio featured Tindersticks' stalwart Terry Edwards and longtime collaborator, Gina Foster.
All songs were written and produced by Stuart A. Staples. The album also features duets with Maria McKee (‘This Road Is Long’) and Lhasa de Sela (‘That Leaving Feeling’).
Leaving Songs will be released with a bonus CD, Stuart’s 2005 solo debut “Lucky Dog Recordings ’03-‘04’”, previously unavailable in the US.
The critics weigh in:
"Staples quivering baritone conveys a sense of shellshock - one that he applies to both the darkness and the dawn, the ghosts of lovers yet to come." - VARIETY
"It's a testament to how dire radio R&B has become that pasty cottage crooners like Staples and back porch troubadours like Lambchop's Kurt Wagner (whose vocals are comparable to Staples') are creating some of the more convincing contemporary soul music." - MAGNET
"There's a gorgeous hesitation in Stuart Staples' voice - a sad hiccup that puts a crimp in his croon. Think: Johnny Mathis meets Leonard Cohen." - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
"Stuart Staples, whose voice once seemed threatening and punkish, has evolved into an affecting front man, shifting effortlessly from sweet crooning to spoken blues, often in the same heartbeat." - AMPLIFIER
