Friendly Fires Announce February 2011 Shows in NYC and Los Angeles! 08 Dec 2010
Get ready to dance … Friendly Fires are excited to announce two upcoming shows in the US. The band will be playing NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on February 7 (onsale 12/8) and The Roxy in Los Angeles on February 9 (onsale 12/10).
These shows are the first the band has played stateside in 14 months and they've chosen more intimate venues in order to premier some tracks from their forthcoming second album, due Spring 2011.
Friendly Fires' Mercury Prize and Brit Awards nominated self-titled debut was released in 2009 and to date has sold over 300,000 copies world-wide. That year they played to rapt audiences in the US including sets at Coachella and Lollapalooza and sold-out shows at, among others, NYC’s Webster Hall and LA’s Henry Fonda Theater. They have appeared on both Last Call With Carson Daly and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
BROKEN RECORDS Announce FIRST US TOUR! 06 Dec 2010
We are excited to announce the first US tour by 4AD's Broken Records in support of their January 11th release Let Me Come Home.
The NME recently reviewed the album and said "It is an elegant and, quite frankly, utterly beautiful record." For nearly every tour date, we are partnering with a local independent record store for a series of ticket giveaways. The list is below with the tour dates.
Speaking about the inspiration behind their second album, Jamie Sutherland says:“An idea started to form about the direction of the new record based on several films and albums that I became gradually obsessed with at that time. Watching the widescreen emptiness of films Badlands, Rumble Fish and East Of Eden, as well as records such as Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads, Calexico’s Feast Of Wire, and REM’s early back catalogue all became a strong influence on the direction of the new songs."
BROKEN RECORDS is Jamie Sutherland (vocals/guitar), Ian Turnbull (guitar), David Smith (piano/trumpet), Andrew Keeney (drums), Rory Sutherland (violin), Craig Ross (bass)
“We’re trying to do something different. People forget that music doesn’t have to be just bass, guitar and drums. It can be just as loud and exciting with glockenspiel and trumpet” – Broken Records

4AD's DARK WAS THE NIGHT album generates 1MILLION dollars for charity! 01 Dec 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
NEW YORK, December 1, 2010, World Aids Day.
THE RED HOT ORGANIZATION DONATES $1,000,000 TO SELECT ORGANIZATIONS FROM PROCEEDS OF 4AD’S DARK WAS THE NIGHT ALBUM
4AD and The Red Hot Organization are delighted to announce that $1,000,000 has been so far donated to charity from the proceeds of the DARK WAS THE NIGHT album. The album was released by 4AD in February 2009, and is a musical collaboration conceived and produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, and Red Hot founder John Carlin. It contains 32 exclusive tracks by an unbelievably talented roster of artists, including Arcade Fire, Blonde Redhead, Bon Iver, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Feist, Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, The New Pornographers, Spoon, and Sufjan Stevens - to name just a few.
In order to recognize the generous contributions of the artists involved with Dark Was The Night, Red Hot asked them to recommend charitable organizations whose work they admire. The list of organizations is below and you can go here to see a fascinating document that explains the goals of each charity and in some cases – exactly what the Red Hot grants were used for.
The Red Hot Organization was founded in 1989 to deal with the crisis surrounding the devastation of the AIDS epidemic on the creative community in downtown New York. Dark Was The Night, released in February 2009, was the 20th Red Hot album.
Beggars Group chairman Martin Mills states “Aaron and Bryce pulled together a wonderful collection of artists, songs and performances that perfectly encapsulates these times and really makes Dark Was The Night into an 'album' - a labor of love that has created this amazing and very tangible result!”
The original charitable concept of Dark Was The Night was to raise awareness about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, and to raise money to help fight the epidemic in the world’s hardest-hit nations. Because of the economic crisis in the West, that concept expanded to include organizations in the US, Canada, and Europe at risk of collapsing due to the downturn in donations and support.
The charities chosen to receive Red Hot grants are:
Advocates For Youth (recommended by The National)
After Hours Project, Inc (recommended by Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings)
AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (recommended by Bon Iver)
A Loving Spoonful (recommended by New Pornographers)
Bronx AIDS Services (recommended by The National)
Camp Amerikids (recommended by The National)
Casey House (recommended by Kevin Drew/Broken Social Scene)
Central City Concern (recommended by Decemberists)
Citta (recommended by David Byne)
Housing Works (recommended by Dirty Projectors)
Nebraska Aids Project (recommended by Conor Oberst)
Out Youth (recommended by Iron & Wine)
Partners In Health (recommended by Arcade Fire)
San Francisco AIDS Foundation (recommended by Kronos Quartet)
Tamasha (recommended by Sufjan Stevens)
In addition to Terrence Higgins Trust, PSI/YouthAIDS, and CHAI.
Dark Was The Night was a long time in the making, and the result of a lot of hard work and generosity from a long list of supporters. Aaron Dessner sums everyone’s feelings up very well. "We want to thank all of the artists and everyone at 4AD again for helping us make Dark Was The Night happen. We also want to thank everyone who has bought this record -- your donations amount to a very significant contribution to Red Hot's mission fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS."

Red Hot donations - overview 01 Dec 2010
The Red Hot Organization has a 20-year history of raising money and awareness to fight AIDS through popular culture by producing and releasing records featuring exclusive tracks by some of the top musical talent around. Its latest project, DARK WAS THE NIGHT, donated over $1 million dollars for AIDS relief around the world.
Most of the organizations chosen to receive Red Hot grants were either nominated or suggested by Artists who appeared on Dark was the Night.
--------------------------
Housing Works / NYC
www.housingworks.org
recommended by Dirty Projectors
Housing Works is the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the U.S. and is especially renowned for addressing the needs of people living with AIDS that other organizations deem “too challenging” to serve. Transcend is an integrated system of social support and health care that addresses the medical, psychiatric and psychosocial needs of transgender and gender non-conforming people. Programs include: general primary care, HIV prevention and health education, STD testing, and linkages to health and nutritional care, and linkages to housing and legal services.

Camp Amerikids
www.campamerikids.org
recommended by The National (Bryce Dressner)
Camp Amerikids provides a traditional camp experience for those youth who are infected with or affected by HIV / AIDS. RH grants funded food, nutritional supplements, infirmary supplies, property & equipment rental, creative workshop supplies, insurance, administration & transportation for the children to and from camp, cultural / educational activities in NYC and weekend skill-building retreats.
Camp Amerikids also offers year-round “Leader-in-Training” activities to former campers.
Executive director, Gaby Moss, wrote: Because of organizations like Red Hot, we can continue to bring strength and joy into the lives of the children we serve. Coming to a place where they can feel welcomed, safe and supported is invaluable. As one of our youngest campers said on the first day of camp last year: “I’m so happy to be home again”.

Out Youth / Austin, TX
www.outyouth.org
recommended by Iron & Wine
Out Youth was founded in 1990 by students in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin as a local support group for queer youth in crisis. Twice a month a tester/counselor from the Health & Human Service Department of Austin visits Out Youth to provide STI testing and counseling. These efforts decrease HIV infection rates among Austin’s youth as well as cultivate new leaders in the fight against HIV/STIs by arming them with the facts they need to provide leadership for their peers.
To express their thanks, members of Out Youth’s community created a video which can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW5s5EFv27w

Partners in Health
www.pih.org
recommended by Arcade Fire
PIH was ranked as one of the top three charities for saving lives reliably and cost-effectively by www.givewell.net. Its HIV Equity Initiative is now a global model for the delivery of community-based treatment for complex diseases within the context of comprehensive primary care. Zanmi Lasante (“Partners In Health” in Haitian Kreyol) is PIH’s flagship project.
The funding donated by Red Hot went directly to the HIV program at Hôpital St Nicolas in St. Marc, in the lower Artibonite region of Haiti – the region where the recent cholera outbreak began. On November 2, 2010, Dr. Suffrin Dimitri -- the head of the HIV program -- reported that, of the 3,000 HIV patients in St Marc, none had fallen ill from cholera. In addition, only one child has been hospitalized out of the 2,000 children enrolled in a pediatric malnutrition program operated by PIH and the non-profit organization ACTED.

Advocates for Youth
www.AdvocatesForYouth.org
suggested by Ohio natives The National
Established in 1980 as the Center for Population Options, Advocates for Youth champions efforts to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. In an effort to advance this cause, Red Hot made a donation towards AFY’s project, “Promoting the Sexual Health of Young People in Ohio.” This project provides materials and assistance to 3,000 youth activists on 65 campuses to distribute more than 30,000 and information about safer sex practices.
In working with AFY, Red Hot decided to share its extensive video library of Public Service Announcements and other AIDS-awareness video clips to the staff at AFY and create a nation-wide anti-stigma competition, allowing young film makers to mix and master the footage as they wish. It is hoped that, combined with an additional grant, Advocates for Youth will create a trove of AIDS awareness and anti-stigma multi-media that will reach the youth of America in ways that are relevant, meaningful and authentic.

Casey House, Toronto, ON

recommended by Kevin Drew / Broken Social Scene
Casey House – located in Toronto, Ontario and the first freestanding HIV/AIDS hospice in Canada, began as a 13-bed residential hospice funded by Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Its Home Hospice Program now offers a full complement of services, helping its clients secure affordable housing; obtain medical assessments & care; and achieve a basic level of comfort many of us take for granted by providing its patients with eye glasses, socks, toothbrushes and other basic necessities.
Money donated from RH went in part to help 124 HIV+ mothers access Casey House’s Child Care Fund over 500 times, “allowing them to tend to their medical and emotional needs and stay with their children.”
“People I had known for a while would not shake hands with me, sit beside me, hug me for fear that they would catch HIV… often I felt the loneliness as people who used to come to visit no longer did.”
Programs like the Child Care Fund “help reduce isolation, increase stability and enhance social connections resulting in an increase in medication adherence, independence, relationship development with community and peers and spiritual support.”

Citta
www.citta.org
recommended by David Byrne
Citta – which derives its name from the Sanskrit word for “compassionate mind” –- is devoted to building institutions around the world to improve health, education and economic well-being.
Its latest initiative – HEED –(Health, Education, & Economic Development) -- is in Juanga, Orissa in eastern India, one of the poorest areas of the country.
Previous surveys in Orissa revealed that 60% of the village women had never heard of HIV. An awareness campaign including song, dance, megaphones attached to rickshaws and a poster sought to remedy that situation.

A Loving Spoonful, Vancouver, BC
www.alovingspoonful.org
recommended by New Pornographers
A Loving Spoonful’s mandate is: 'No One Living with HIV/AIDS should live with Hunger.’ Since its inception in 1989 they have served almost 1.75 million meals to Vancouver residents affected by the disease.
These meals, which a staff dietician tailors to meet the needs of each recipient, are nutritious and free of charge, and are distributed by volunteer drivers who donate their own cars, gas and time.
The grant ALS received will go towards purchasing fresh fruits, vegetables, bread and dairy products for their clients.

AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin
www.arcw.org
recommended by Bon Iver
The ARCW Medical Center has emerged as the largest provider of HIV health care in the state; serving more HIV positive women, African-Americans, Hispanics, gay men and indigent patients than any other HIV clinic. As more than one-third of its HIV patients have no health care coverage, ARCW provides nearly $2.1 million of uncompensated care to its indigent patients. A grant from the Red Hot Organization helps support the medical, dental and mental health care of indigent HIV patients in Wisconsin, so they may continue to receive care, free of charge.

San Francisco AIDS Foundation

recommended by Kronos Quartet
SFAF is the largest AIDS service organization in San Francisco and among the most highly acclaimed in the country. Its public awareness, prevention, and education efforts currently reach approximately 120,000 people affected by HIV each year.
A grant from The Red Hot Organization helps support programs such as Black Brothers Esteem, El Grupo and Magnet, that promote health and create sustainable progress against HIV in underserved populations.

Old Town Clinic (OTC) located in Central City, Colorado, recorded 18,732 visits to approximately 2,446 patients at the poverty level, most are whom are uninsured. Monies received through a grant from RH funded OTC’s “Hot Sauce,” a Recovery‐Oriented pain management program for 80 identified, high‐need individuals who have chronic pain, addictive and other behavioral health disorders. Objectives of this program include reducing primary care provider visits and opiate dosages. Hot Sauce programs explore using diet, stretching, handling stress and other non-medical methods of minimizing pain.

After Hours Project, Inc, NYC
www.afterhoursproject.org
suggested by Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
After Hours Project, Inc. (AHP) is a community-based harm reduction program that, since May 2002, has addressed the continued spread of HIV/AIDS in the predominantly low income and minority neighborhoods where AHP’s founders live and work, Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York and Brownsville, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens. AHP utilizes a street-based mobile and storefront approach that combines evidence-based models of service delivery with mobility, discreetness and personal attention: effective methods for reaching people at the highest risk for HIV/AIDS. AHP adheres to a non-judgmental and non-coercive approach in providing services and ascribes to a philosophy of “reaching clients where they’re at.” AHP staff is particularly successful because they are culturally and ethnically sensitive, linguistically competent and familiar with the history of the neighborhoods they serve.

Nebraska Aids Project
www.nap.org
recommended by Conor Oberst
Nebraska is a very conservative state, and as such, the biggest obstacle to combating AIDS there is stigma. NAP, the only community-based AIDS Service Organization in Nebraska, provides amenities such as housing assistance, support groups, homeless outreach, etc. to more than 1,000 person living with HIV / AIDS and their families. RH’s grant will be used to battle AIDS’ stigma and raise awareness in order to prevent further transmission of the disease. Its proposed multidisciplinary collaborations will utilize social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr to extend its anti-stigma campaign beyond urban centers and into and throughout rural Nebraska.

Terrence Higgins Trust

In thanks to all at Beggars Group & UK Artists
On DWTN
Established in 1982, and named after one of the first people to die of AIDS in England, Terrence Higgins Trust is the leading and largest HIV and sexual health charity in the UK. Its mission is to promote better HIV, sexual and general health by education of the public, the provision of HIV and sexual health programs and material, care and support services, clinical services, advice information and advocacy.
In June 2010, the Terrence Higgins Trust merged with Crusaid to better serve the needs of those people suffering from HIV / AIDS. The core of these programs include counseling on a range of issues including HIV, sexuality, sexual abuse and general relationship issues. All counselors are fully trained and supported, but current finances allow for only one volunteer counselor at their centre in Glasgow and no counselor in Grampian. RH’s grant will allow THT to pay for sessional counselors who can also supervise volunteer counselors and therefore provide greater access for THT’s clients.

Tamasha, Tanzania

While researching Faraja Trust – recommended to us by the Decemberists, Red Hot’s Program Director learned of another organization located in Tanzania that was seeking funding for it’s peer-to-peer AIDS / HIV counseling services, focusing on the needs of adolescent girls and young women. Located in Arusha – one of the fastest growing urban centers in Tanzania -- Tamasha (also known as the Youth Participatory Development Centre) was founded by former UNICEF worker Richard Mabala.

PSI / YouthAIDS
http://www.psi.org/
Red Hot’s commitment to PSI/YouthAIDS began while DWTN was in production
PSI, founded in 1970, is a leading global health organization with programs targeting malaria, child survival, HIV and reproductive health. Working in partnership within the public and private sectors, and harnessing the power of the markets, PSI provides life-saving products, clinical services and behavior change communications that empower the world's most vulnerable populations to lead healthier lives.
In the summer of 2010, Red Hot awarded funds to PSI to fund a new initiative on the Mexican – American border where injecting drug use, (IDU) and the diseases associated with it such as HIV and Hepatitis C, have been growing rapidly. This support will cover the cost of purchasing and operating a mobile unit vehicle for 24 months and reaching 800 IDUs per year with needed services.

Bronx AIDS Services
http://www.basnyc.org/
recommended by The National (Bryce Dressner)
Founded in 1986, Bronx AIDS Services (BAS) is the leading provider of non-hospital-based HIV / AIDS services in the Bronx. Each year, BAS helps more than 8,000 Bronx residents with services and programs that touch people who are living with HIV/AIDS, people who think they might have been exposed to HIV, and those who are at high risk of exposure to the virus.
Money from Red Hot went to support BAS’ efforts to keep low-income Bronx residents who are living with HIV / AIDS stably and safely housed. Such housing is associated over time with reduced HIV risk behaviors and improved health-care outcomes such as reduced emergency room visits, hospitalizations, opportunistic infections and unsafe sex trade practices.

As those of you who buy our music from eMusic will know by now, our music will very shortly no longer be available from that site.
We wish this hadn’t happened, but as eMusic has brought major labels on board, they have changed the terms on which they deal with labels in certain ways, some of which we have found impossible to accept, in our own interests, those of our artists, and ultimately those of their fans.
We have loved eMusic, and the support it has given to our music, but it was the dedicated home for independent music and is, in our view, not that any more.
You will continue to find our music on many other great sites and stores, we encourage you to visit them, or ask us where.

BEGGARS ARCHIVE RELASES LASTEST OMNIBUS EDITION
THE WONDERFUL AND FRIGHTENING WORLD OF... THE FALL - OUT NOW!
NEXT IN SERIES - THE FALL’S THIS NATION’S SAVING’S GRACE – TO BE RELEASE IN EARLY 2011
The Wonderful And Frightening World Of .. The Fall Vinyl Reissue Out November 22.
This Nation’s Saving Grace Vinyl Reissue Out November 22
The Beggars Group has just released the latest in their Omnibus collection - The Falls’s The Wonderful And Frightening World Of .. The Fall (Omnibus Edition) is now in-stores (Oct 26). The label is going to reissue the original album on vinyl on November 22. Further Beggars will be reissuing, also on vinyl, the band’s 1985 album This Nation’s Saving Grace. An Omnibus edition of that album is scheduled for early 2011.
Compiled for fans, the Omnibus Editions are intended to expand and illuminate the development of specific albums, bringing together all the relevant single releases with previously unreleased studio, session and live recordings. Omnibus Editions are presented as limited edition box sets and include CD’s in the Japanese-style paper sleeves, reproducing the original vinyl cover art, with a 48 page book. There have been three previous Omnibus Editions – Bauhuas’ Mask and In The Flat Field and The Cult’s Love.
Released in 1984, The Wonderful And Frightening World Of The Fall was the band's eighth studio album and their first for Beggars Banquet. This release chronicles that year; from the full integration of Brix Smith into the group, the introduction of John Leckie as the recording producer, the BBC sessions, live shows, changes in the line-up and the rise of a wider appreciation for The Fall’s music.
The first CD edition (issued in 1988) followed the extended track sequence of the cassette but for this Omnibus Edition the album has been re-mastered from the studio analogue tapes and restored to its original nine song format with all additional tracks on disc 2.
Disc 3 gathers all the relevant BBC sessions: not only a predictable John Peel session recorded in December 1983 (the earliest recordings of TWAFWOTF material) but also previously unreleased sessions from David Jensen and Janice Long as well as a 'Saturday Live' recording.
Disc 4 is a live recording made by VPRO radio at Pandora's Music Box festival in The Netherlands and is remarkably perky considering The Fall took to the stage for their headline set at 3.15am on a Sunday morning.
The Fall made the leap to a semi-major label - Beggars Banquet - with The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall, hooking up with noted producer John Leckie to create another smart, varied album. Contemporaneous with the slightly friendlier "Oh! Brother" and "C.R.E.E.P." singles without actually including them, Wonderful and Frightening World makes few concessions to the larger market - every potential hook seemed spiked with the band's usual rough take-it-or-leave-it stance. Mark E. Smith's audible, tape-distorting spit on the descending chord blast of "Elves" - already spiked with enough vocal craziness as it is - gives a sense of where the album as a whole aims. Brix Smith co-writes about half the tracks, creating a strong partnership with many highlights. It may start with a semi-low-key chant, but when "Lay of the Land" fully kicks in, it does just that, Craig Scanlon in particular pouring on the feedback at the end over the clattering din. Smith sounds as coruscating and side-splittingly hilarious as ever, depicting modern Britain with an eye for the absurdities and failures (and crucially, no empathy - it's all about a gimlet eye projected at everyone and everything). Two further standouts appear on the second half - "Slang King," a snarling portrayal of a cool-in- his-mind dude and his increasingly pathetic life, and the concluding "Disney's Dream Debased." Though unquestionably the most conventionally attractive tune on the album, ringing guitars and all, Smith's lyrics portray a Disneyland scenario in hell, however softly delivered. Elsewhere, Gavin Friday from the Virgin Prunes takes a bow with his own unmistakable, spindly vocals on the trebly Krautrock chug of "Copped It" and the slightly more brute rhythm of "Stephen Song." 41/2 out of 5 stars – Ned Raggett – All Media Guide
