new ALELA DIANE album in April! 28 Jan 2011

Alela Diane’s new album will be released on April 5th by Rough Trade

Rough Trade is pleased to announce the release of the third studio album by Alela Diane, titled Alela Diane & Wild Divine. A self-taught musician, Alela hails from northern California and currently resides in Portland, Oregon.

Alela Diane & Wild Divine will be released on April 5th, 2010. Penned on the road whilst touring in 2009, it was completed in 2010 with husband and guitarist Tom Bevitori. Wild Divine refers to Bevitori and the rest of her band – father and guitarist Tom Menig, bassist Jonas Haskins and drummer Jason Merculief.

When producer /engineer Scott Litt (Nirvana, REM, The Replacements) caught wind of the circling demos he ceased his seven-year dormancy and invited the group to his home studio in Venice, CA to make the album.

Alela Diane & Wild Divine is the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2009 album To Be Still, and her 2006 debut The Pirate’s Gospel. Previously signed to Rough Trade in the US, Canada and Japan, she recently signed to the label for the world.

Alela has previously toured with The Decemberists and Iron and Wine. She and her band Wild Divine will be touring the US this summer.

"A skilled acoustic purveyor of dark, spare Americana awash in chilly imagery and evocative lyricism" – AUSTIN AMERICAN STATESMAN
"what shines is her twanged-out voice, which goes from a gentle whisper into a yowl that rages like a California wildfire" -ROLLING STONE
"a soul whose musical motives are as crystal clear and refreshingly distinctive as her pretty voice" - BUST
"There is a powerful weariness to 25-year-old Alela Diane’s voice as it dips and curls its way through her second album, woozy pedal steel glinting and shimmering all about her, hollow-hooved percussion trailing in her wake" - PASTE

WARPAINT ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR 18 Jan 2011

For immediate release:

We are excited to announce a Spring tour by WARPAINT.  Their explosive live shows have been blowing people's minds and we're happy that they are returning to share their energy for a month-long US tour! The trek starts in San Francisco on March 16th, and continues through to mid-April. All dates are below.

Warpaint is a 4-piece, all female band from LA. In existence since 2004, The Fool is the full-length they have been threatening to make all along - and it proves that the wait - and the search for new drummer Stella Mozgawa, was well worth it. Rough Trade released The Fool late in 2010.

Their former drummer is none-other than actress Shannyn Sossamon, who directed their music video for "Undertow", currently in heavy rotation on MTV.  Watch it here:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMkqbY0oGKQ

MTV also recently filmed one of the band's New York shows for their "live in NYC" series.

"Bass lines snake through a gauzy swirl of guitars, underpinned by surprisingly funky drumming. The singers seem to be almost conversing, finishing each other's thoughts as they seduce all who come within earshot"
- CHICAGO TRIBUNE, #10 album of 2010

"While too many indie girl groups seem content to rebuild the Wall of Sound brick by brick, this Los Angeles quartet dedicate their hypnotic harmonies and guitars to a different cause: the House of Ian Curtis." - SPIN 8/10

In addition to the album, the live shows have been receiving amazing reviews....

"It’s easy to be a great drummer by being loud, but Stella Mozgawa finds all the other ways. She's dense, leaving little air in her patterns. She’s not overly forceful, sometimes sounding as if she were nudging the rhythm out. And she’s reliably in the pocket, the steady force that sets the mood and pace for the rest of the band. Thursday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg that band, Warpaint, followed Ms. Mozgawa wherever she took it, its narcotizing hum swept along by a rollicking thunderstorm"
- THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Their stupendous debut full-length, The Fool, triangulates Moon Pix–era Cat Power's ghostly, morbid, gorgeous bedroom folk with the Slits' lithe, muscular post-punk, but onstage at the Webster Hall Studio Wednesday night, the latter style dominates, thanks mostly to drummer Stella Mozgawa, a dervish of brash snare cracks, liquid drum rolls, emphatic soundman-hailing gestures, and rampant giggling." - VILLAGE VOICE

FRIENDLY FIRES CONFIRM US TOUR !! 18 Jan 2011

AND ... NYC & LA FEBRUARY DATES SOLD OUT!!!
AND ... BAND DEFINITE FOR SXSW!!!

Hot on the heels of announcing 2 US shows in February – NYC’s Bowery Ballroom on February 7 (SOLD OUT) and at Los Angeles’ Roxy on February 9 (SOLD OUT) Friendly Fires are now excited to announce a full US tour.    The dates kick off May 24 at Philadelphia’s First Unitarian Church and conclude June 10 at The Music Box At Henry Fonda Theater in LA.   The band will play Webster Hall in NYC on February 25.   The full tour is listed below.

Friendly Fires are also confirmed to play select shows at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX.  Exact dates / shows / times are TBA.

The band is promising a new album (working title Pala) this Spring and will be performing tracks off of it and their Mercury Prize and Brit Awards nominated self-titled debut which was released in 2009 (and has gone on to sell nearly 300k worldwide).  Pala is mainly self-produced with Paul Epworth also working on some tracks at their St Albans bunker.

Friendly Fires are Ed Macfarlane (vocals, synths, bass), Edd Gibson (guitar) and Jack Savidge (drums). Hailing from St Albans where the trio met as teenagers, Friendly Fires’ intuitive grasp of kinetic art-funk, electronic euphoria and stadium-sized anthems has led to them becoming one of the most exciting and critically feted new bands of the past few years, playing sold out shows across the globe.  They draw their inspiration as much from the electronic music world as the guitar one, sharing a love of the likes of Liquid Liquid, My Bloody Valentine and the German techno label Kompakt Records. Since the release of Friendly Fires, they’ve further explored their electronic side; first throwing a huge rave with renowned London promoters Bugged Out at the capital’s Coronet venue, then releasing a double A-sided single with DFA’s Holy Ghost, before teaming up with Toronto house crew Azari & III for a collaboration (Stay Here) that would feature on a Friendly Fires DJ mix album for the !K7 label. Most recently, the band provided the soundtrack for the Frank Miller-directed Fall 2010 Gucci Guilty perfume commercial with their cover of Depeche Mode's "Strangelove".

Vincent Moon + Efterklang invite you to host a film screening 12 Jan 2011

Vincent Moon & Efterklang unveil plans for Private-Public Screenings of AN ISLAND

Late last year the Nordic Music Prize nominated Danish band Efterklang and renowned French filmmaker Vincent Moon announced their film project AN ISLAND, a unique musical collaboration. The film will be aired before the majority of the Efterklang live shows on their forthcoming European tour (February 17th - March 18th).

However Efterklang and Vincent Moon are also inviting people to host their own screenings of AN ISLAND throughout February and March. Dubbed Private-Public Screenings, the rules are very simple. In order to host a screening, each event must adhere to the following:

•    The screenings need to have free entrance
•    The screenings need to be public
•    The screenings need to have a minimum capacity of 5 people
•    The screenings need to be verified by Efterklang & Vincent Moon and only screenings that are featured on www.anisland.cc are official Private-Public Screenings

In other words as long as entrance is free and it is an open event (as capacity permits) the Private-Public Screenings can take place at a home, at a café, in a school auditorium - basically, anywhere. Those planning to host screenings in their own homes will be able to have full control over who can attend.

From today Efterklang and Vincent Moon will be accepting
Private-Public Screening applications of AN ISLAND.
For more information and details on how to apply visit www.anisland.cc/home

We hope that a lot of people will host and attend screenings of AN ISLAND. The Private-Public Screenings are our attempt at creating a free and inspiring distribution method for our film. It is also our attempt to give something back to our many supporters around the world. We have financed this film ourselves and we hope that we can recoup some of that money through donations. However, the memory of the 4 days we spent on the island of Als in August 2010 and our joy and pride of the finished film is a huge reward in itself.
- Vincent Moon & Efterklang

The third teaser trailer for AN ISLAND also just aired. It can now be seen at www.anisland.cc

For an updated list of the current and future Official Screenings and Private-Public Screenings of AN ISLAND go to: www.anisland.cc/home/attend-a-screening

About AN ISLAND

AN ISLAND
is an unconventional music performance film and an abstract documentary about a band and an island.

In August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang's 8 piece-live band met up on an island off the Danish coast. The objective was to shoot a film that was the same length as an album, and full of performances, experiments and collaborations.

Over an intense period of four days Efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their album Magic Chairs (4AD, 2010). It was documented by Vincent Moon who also conducted several filmic and musical experiments with Efterklang as his dedicated playmates.

Efterklang: "We value An Island as much as we value our albums. We are so proud to be part of this and can't wait for it to premiere."

Vincent Moon: "An Island is not similar to any other film I have done with bands or artists. This is a collaboration on a deeper level. I’m hoping this film can push the boundaries between images and sounds, resulting in a hybrid, a film in between genres."
