JAMIE XX CONFIRMS DJ SET FOR FEBRUARY 22 AT NYC'S LE POISSON ROUGE 11 Feb 2011

Solo Debut Album - Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx’s We’re New Here – Out February 22

We’re New Here Currently Being Broadcast In Select Locations Via Album Transmissions

Jamie xx is excited to announce that he will be coming over for a very special DJ set at New York City’s LPR on February 22, to celebrate the release of his solo debut album We're New Here. Jamie's album/style is part of the incredibly exciting scene that is evolving from Dubstep in the UK.  Also on the bill (handpicked by Jamie) are Sepalcure and Creep - two of the most exciting artist coming out of New York who are part of this same scene.  Also on February 22, Jamie’s solo debut album - Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx’s We’re New Here - is being released on XL Recordings / Young Turks. The last eighteen months have been meteoric for Jamie xx. Jamie xx is not only in The xx but is also the mastermind behind the production of the band’s brilliant debut album xx.  The album received huge acclaim world-wide including picking up 2010’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize.   At the same time Jamie’s reputation as a producer and mixer grew exponentially through, in particular, his remix of Florence & The Machine’s “You’ve Got The Love.” More recently his remix of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” only strengthened the notion that Jamie xx’s mixes are going to define dancefloors in 2011 and beyond.   Jamie xx recently went into the studio with Drake who told the BBC “"The praises I'll sing the most is definitely The xx and Jamie Smith, and we're working on my upcoming second album, Take Care, together. Jamie is probably one of the most exciting producers I've ever heard."

On Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx’s We’re New Here Jamie has re-imagined Gil Scott-Heron’s 2010 release I’m New Here.   The Fader has said of the album "It may be an odd choice to have your solo debut carry the stamp of another man, especially one as well known as Scott-Heron, but Smith is not a frontman.  Scott-Heron becomes his ghostly narrator, a pillar of salt for Smith's doleful and meticulous programming"   and the UK’s Uncut has called the album “a raw, stripped-down triumph.” We’re New Here is the the sound of a young man discovering the different histories and fabrics of US/UK/EU dance music.   Currently fans have been given the opportunity to hear We’re New Here via album transmitters located around the world which are broadcasting the album.   For more information on this exciting preview log onto  www.werenewhere.com/radio using a smart phone (iPhone / Android / touch screen Blackberry). The album is being broadcast 24 hours a day but can only be heard at the exact transmitter locations. As a DJ Jamie xx is booked (and headlines) worldwide. However in London he is the DJ right now.   His set at LPR is destined to be one of those nights that give you bragging rights to say “you know I saw him when he played a tiny club.”  Don’t miss Jamie xx live at LPR on February 22.

"One of the reasons why everyone loves the British band The xx is their captivating, hypnotic beats.  These are the product of mixmaster Jamie Smith, the only non-singing member of the group who instead focuses on the group’s overall rhythms and sounds."   Nylon

new album by THE UNTHANKS in April 10 Feb 2011

THE UNTHANKS present Last – set for release on April 19th

Rachel and Becky Unthank are sisters, and yes – that really is their last name. They are from Northumberland, which is a county in the north east of England. Scheduled for release in the US by Rough Trade on April 19th, Last is their fourth album…and despite the name, won’t be their last. Formerly known as Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, their Mercury nominated 2007 album The Bairns was the only British folk album in both the The Guardian and Uncut’s best albums of the decade. They followed it in 2009 with Here's The Tender Coming. Their many outspoken fans include Radiohead, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Damon Albarn, Ewan McGregor, Nick Hornby and more.

On Last, The Unthanks continue their predilection for unlikely covers, with interpretations of King Crimson’s “Starless”, Tom Waits’ “No One Knows I’m Gone”, and a song intended to champion the unheralded British songwriter Jon Redfern.

“They are like the morning dew that hasn’t steamed off yet, they are fresh and new and I really don’t think they know how good they are”
-Robert Wyatt

“this contemporary folk ensemble makes a breathtaking chamber music of olde English mystery, and bold original adaptations of traditional sources and early British folk-revival covers. An incredible sting-and-singing band.”

Pantha Du Prince - April release - "reworkings" of Black Noise tracks! 08 Feb 2011

Rough Trade Records are excited to announce the April 19th release of XI versions of Black Noise by Pantha Du Prince, an album of reworkings of tracks originally on his album Black Noise by friends and contemporaries including amongst others Animal Collective, Moritz Von Oswald, Four Tet, Efdemin and North American pioneer Hieroglyphic Being. Pantha Du Prince also does his own new version of “Lay In A Shimmer”.

The full tracklisting is as follows:
1. MORITZ VON OSWALD THE ONE VERSION OF “WELT AM DRAHT“
2. DIE VÖGEL VERSION OF “WELT AM DRAHT“
3. LAWRENCE VERSION OF “STICK TO MY SIDE“
4. FOUR TET VERSION OF “STICK TO MY SIDE“
5. THE SIGHT BELOW VERSION OF “A NOMAD´S RETREAT“
6. EFDEMIN VERSION OF “STICK TO MY SIDE“
7. HIEROGLYPHIC BEING VERSION OF “SATELLITE SNIPER“
8. CARSTEN JOST VERSION OF “STICK TO MY SIDE“
9. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE VERSION OF “WELT AM DRAHT“
10. PANTHA DU PRINCE “LAY IN A SHIMMER“ FATA MORGANA VERSION
11. WALLS VERSION OF “STICK TO MY SIDE“

Pantha Du Prince’s Black Noise has been lauded as a groundbreaking, seminal album in it’s field:

“Each track is its own micro sound world with enough rich detail to draw you back for deeper investigation. The album is undoubtedly a success for Weber-- if not an outright step forward, then a graceful lateral one-- who probably could have gotten away with not making such a comprehensive shift in sound. Instead he chose to deconstruct his signature style, and the result is strikingly unique.”
-PITCHFORK, 8.3, Best New Music
“Black Noise just might be the height of Weber’s work under the Pantha Du Prince moniker” -XLR8R
“music that crackles like static in a sky burdened by storm, then glitters like a rain soaked landscape illuminated by sun” – 4/5 The Guardian

Pantha Du Prince, who lives in Berlin and Paris, claims: music slumbers in all matter; any sound, even silence, is already music. The mission, then, must be to render audible what is unheard and unheard of: black noise, a frequency that is inaudible to man. Black noise often presages natural disasters, earthquakes or floods; only some animals perceive this “calm before the storm.” Black noise is something archaic and earthy. The music on Black Noise balances precariously on the slippery threshold between art and nature, between techno and folklore. On this album, rifts, fractures, and digressions are not flaws in the system but acoustic micro-vectors that drive the narrative. The intros serve to present the source sounds recorded “out there”—knocking, barking, ringing, tinkling which are then soon caught in the currents of vaguely psychedelic mutations. Noises blend into one another, and the most diverse acoustic designs are in play: steel drums and marimbas as well as physical modeling.

Pantha Du Prince has released several recordings through the respected German label Dial Records. His previous album This Bliss, was a bittersweet take on techno, which appealed to both dancefloors and living rooms alike and was hugely successful. As a result he has become an in-demand remixer and has done tracks for Depeche Mode, Animal Collective, Bloc Party, and many others. Black Noise is his third album and first for Rough Trade.

As Geoff Travis (Rough Trade founder) has said: “When Rough Trade started we were very much involved with the first wave of do it yourself electronica, with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle amongst our early releases. It is nice to be able to return to the fray with one of the most musically eloquent practitioners in this field, Pantha Du Prince.”

Pantha Du Prince is currently working on an installation as an audiovisual artist in Berlin and a dance piece with Parisian Collective Last Last.  He is also working on a new live presentation of his music incorporating ambitious lighting and visual elements, to be premiered late this year or early 2012.

& Jonsi’s “Go Do” Video Premieres Today Via LiveNation.com

Sigur Rós front man Jónsi is excited to announce that Jónsi Live At The Wiltern is released today Tuesday, February 1, 2011 via iTunes.

Sigur Rós front man Jónsi is excited to announce that Jónsi Live At The Wiltern is released today Tuesday, February 1, 2011 via iTunes.

Jónsi Live At The Wiltern was directed by Dean DeBlois, (the director of the Oscar -nominated film How To Train Your Dragon and the Sigur Ros film Heima).   The footage – recorded at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater - was first aired on NPR on Sunday October 17, 2010 and it marked the first-ever live video webcast of a concert for the public radio organization. This show at the Wiltern was part of Jónsi’s final US tour in support of his solo debut Go (XL Recordings).   The New York Times said of his live show “Jonsi’s high, clear voice was not only the carrier of insistent pop hooks, but also a messenger of ecstatic hope.” and NPR’s “All Things Considered” ran a feature detailing the Jónsi concert experience, likening his stage show to a live film: http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2010/09/27/130164130/jonsi

Also today, February 1,  LiveNation.com premiers Jónsi’s “Go Do” video.  This video, directed by Dean DeBlois as well, is taken from the same Wiltern show.   You can view is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wkYJdpbJtg   LiveNation gets 16.8 million monthly unique visitors and is the nation’s #1 Ticketing Site on the web.  Tomorrow, February 2, Vevo will feature the video on their homepage.

Go was released on April 6 of 2010 to wide-spread critical acclaim.   Spin.com said ““Sigur Ros is a beautiful thing, but when he goes solo, Jonsi does something amazing – he lets his freak flag fly.” and Rolling Stone chimed in with 3 ½ stars calling the album “energized ambient pop” and saying “when the loops and beats are kicking up dust, the man’s blissful blues feel earned.”   Go landed on several year-end lists including #1 for NPR staffer Stephen Thompson's top 10 and #2 for his colleague Bob Boilen's.  NPR included it in their top 50 and their listeners ranked it at #13.

tUnE-yArDs announces new album w h o k i l l out 4/19 on 4AD! NEW Tour Dates! 01 Feb 2011

April 19th marks the release of the second album from Merrill Garbus' tUnE-yArDs. Entitled w h o k i l l, the album was recorded shortly after Garbus transplanted herself from Montreal to sunny Oakland, California having extensively toured debut album BiRd-BrAiNs through 2009 and 2010.

w h o k i l l retains the honesty of the lonely bedroom confessionals of her early work, but with the addition of the fangs, claws and dented metal of her new surroundings. Indeed, Oakland’s particular landscapes serve as primer for what you hear on the album, with the city’s unique vitality fueling the brightness of w h o k i l l. By applying the tUnE-yArDs live approach to her studio work for the first time, Merrill’s added more buttons and joints to those already being used -  one essential new joint is dexterous bass member Nate Brenner, who co-wrote a few songs.

Produced by Garbus herself and working with engineer Eli Crews, they show there’s no substitute for a good microphone, and the sonic nuances that can only be achieved through masterful recording techniques can be heard in each drumbeat and vocal line. Speaking to Pitchfork about the new record, Garbus explains:

"People kept saying, "Oh, I wish your recordings were more like your live show." But the stubborn, contrarian impulse in me wanted to rebel against their desires a little bit. I have no interest in making a live album. But, at the same time, I wanted to record it better than I had been able to record the last album. So I went into a real studio with a real engineer and real microphones."

Details of a late April/early May North American tour have also been announced today, with the first show taking place in San Francisco on April 26th. Further updates can also be found at the band's website http://www.tune-yards.com/
