VAMPIRE WEEKEND will be SNL's musical guest on March 6th! 24 Feb 2010

....from NBC
Comedian Zach Galifianakis will make his SNL hosting debut March 6.
Known for his hilariously unconventional stand-up style and off-beat
comedy, Galifianakis has emerged as one of today's most talked about
up-and-coming actors after starring in 2009's Golden Globe winning
comedy, "The Hangover." Galifianakis has also appeared in HBO's series
"Bored To Death," "Into The Wild," G-Force," and the Oscar nominated
drama, "Up In The Air." He will next be seen later this year alongside
Robert Downey Jr. in the feature film, "Due Date."
Joining Galifianakis on March 6, Vampire Weekend makes their second SNL
appearance. Formed while studying at Columbia University, this eclectic
quartet burst onto the music scene with a deafening amount of buzz.
Their self-titled debut in 2008 received universal acclaim, debuted in
the Top 20 on the Billboard Album chart and has recently gone gold. The
band's sophomore album, "Contra," was released on January 12th and
debuted at number one on the Billboard charts.
Vampire Weekend announce RADIO CITY show! 22 Feb 2010

VAMPIRE WEEKEND ANNOUNCES RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL SHOW
Vampire Weekend is excited to headline New York’s legendary Radio City Music Hall on Wednesday September 15th, 2010. Tickets for the show will be available for pre-sale on February 24th 12noon e.s.t. via Ticketmaster. The general sale starts on February 26th at 12noon e.s.t.
The band’s sophomore release, Contra, was released by XL Recordings on January 12th and debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, which was a first for a truly independent release by an indie rock band. The album has received rave reviews and the band has performed on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien and The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, with more to come. Vampire Weekend played three sold-out New York shows in mid-January celebrating Contra's release, and The Radio City Music Hall show will be the band’s first hometown performance in 8 months.
Vampire Weekend will begin a North American tour on March 14th in Edmonton, Alberta after spending nearly a month overseas. The tour will continue through to mid-April with a performance at the Coachella Festival. The band will also be playing at the Sasquatch Festival in late May in addition to numerous festivals all over the world this summer.
Basia Bulat playing select U.S. Tour Dates in February and March! 18 Feb 2010
Basia Bulat has been covering a lot of ground in her native Canada. Luckily we are not forsaken, as Basia will be performing select U.S. Tour Dates in the next couple of months! Her most recent release, Heart Of My Own just came out on Rough Trade.
"Heart of My Own" bubbles with quiet intensity: Understated guitar and banjo, minute string arrangements, a dampened floor tom and distant multi-part vocal harmonies place the focus on Bulat's unwavering voice, a single powerful element in a beautiful but unforgiving landscape." NPR - Song Of The Day
"... it's her rare, extraordinary voice that makes her a fresh find in the notoriously musty folk-pop bin. Graceful and incandescent, confident but approachable, her alto's the aural equivalent of the perfect party host who makes every guest not only welcome, but certain they're the most important person in the room." Pitchfork
"Who's singing in the new Subaru Outback commercial in which a man loses his sunglasses, then finds them in the hood of his sweatshirt? And what's the song? The song is Before I Knew, by Canadian singer/songwriter Basia Bulat. Her new album, Heart of My Own, showcases Bulat's wide-ranging influences, from soul music to American folk." USA Weekend
"This 25-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has one of those powerful, lilting, “Who is that?’ voices that immediately grabs your attention both with its technique and its unbridled emotion. Her new album, “Heart of My Own,” is a worthy follow-up to her 2007 debut, “Oh, My Darling,” showcasing both that amazing voice and her open-hearted songwriting." Wisconsin State Journal

ABOUT PS.859 - THE SPECIAL MUSIC SCHOOL
The Special Music School (SMS) is a unique model for how publicly funded arts education can work.
SMS was founded in 1996 as a public/private partnership between the New York City Department of Education and the Kaufman Center, a not-for-profit, multi-arts organization. Its students have benefitted greatly from an integrated approach to curriculum, receiving rigorous musical training and academic guidance in a holistic context that emphasizes creative thinking and problem solving.
THE NEED FOR MUSIC EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
Producing future generations of musicians and adults who appreciate art is vital to our social fabric.
Beyond creating art, a recent Conference Board Report revealed that 74 percent of employers agree that creativity is increasingly important in U.S. workplaces. In addition, teamwork and critical thinking ranked in the five most important skills for new workforce entrants, yet more than half of these employers stated that entrants exhibited deficiencies in these skills. Ensuring that students have the opportunity to study a musical instrument helps resolve this deficit.
As other nations have looked to the United States education system as a model, and are including arts education in their curricula, many American schools are cutting these same programs. Without music programs in our public schools our children and our culture are weakened.
