We Are The Wiley: A Benefit for Jon Wiley featuring ADAM GREEN. 01 Jul 2009

A circle of Brooklyn-based friends have joined together to throw a benefit for beloved, local musician, Jon Wiley. We Are the Wiley: A Benefit Concert for Jon Wiley will feature Adam Green, Lightspeed Champion, DJ Johnny Tropical, and Chairlift at The Shank—an art space and concert venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn—on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 8PM.

On March 5, 2009, professional guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, Jon Wiley awoke without feeling or mobility in his arms and legs. He was subsequently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and incurred more than $30,000 worth of medical bills for his week-long hospital stay. After a lengthy recovery process, Jon has regained most feeling in his limbs and has gone on in recent months to record and perform with Lightspeed Champion, Adam Green, and his solo project, SpaceCamp. However, he is still without the means to afford his own healthcare.

Join us to celebrate the extraordinary talent of Jon Wiley, and raise funds to cover the expenses of a musician in need. This is a concrete opportunity to help a friend who, like so many artists and musicians in the United States, lack affordable healthcare. Jon’s story highlights the importance of healthcare for every person and the value of living each day to the fullest.

Taken By Trees - new album in September!!! 01 Jul 2009

Taken By Trees announce new album East Of Eden

Release date: September 8th, 2009

Rough Trade records is excited to release East Of Eden, the new album by Taken By Trees. It will be released on September 8th, and is the result of an extraordinarily adventurous recording process in Pakistan with local musicians. The album will also come with a short film that was shot in Pakistan while recording.

Taken by Trees is the nom de plume of Victoria Bergsman, previously best known for her work with The Concretes and Peter Bjorn & John’s worldwide smash hit single "Young Folks". This new offering follows in the footsteps of Taken By Trees critically acclaimed debut album Open Field which was released in 2007.

Victoria wanted to travel to record in a mysterious, relatively uncharted area, and avoid the usual clinical studio experience, which she has always disliked and found to be an essentially uncreative environment. In order to provide herself with both an interesting challenge and an inspirational recording environment, she chose Pakistan. The rhythm, drums and flutes of Pakistani music had long captivated Victoria and this coupled with a deep admiration for one of her favorite singers Abida Parveen and the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan helped her choose Pakistan as the place to record her new album.

While it’s practically a miracle that the album was made at all, the experience and environment there has created a masterful work with a depth of expression and feeling that is breathtaking. Victoria is one of the very few, if not the only, Western women, to record in this region, and the bureaucracy, cultural differences and prejudices she had to overcome to see this project through are beyond belief.

JACK PENATE ANNOUNCES FIRST EVER US TOUR 23 Jun 2009

Jack Peñate will be spending some quality time in the US for the first time
ever and we couldn't be more excited. We are very lucky to have him for a
full three week tour starting in mid-September!

Everything Is New
is Jack's new record, and it will be released on August 18th
via XL Recordings.

Listen to the first single "Tonight's Today" here: http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/JackPenate_TonightsToday.mp3

Jack Peñate's debut album Matinée was just that...his beginning...the early show.
He was, by his own admission, just a kid. A south London bedroom-boy-with-acoustic-guitar.
He ducked, he dived, he played tons of shows in the UK and a rare few in the US.
In the UK Matinée went gold; the single, "Torn On The Platform",entered their charts
at Number 7 and he was even on the cover of the NME. Not a bad start at all, but his
sophomore album Everything Is New, is exactly that. He's starting fresh with a new
chapter and new sounds. He's ripped it up and started again. Total honesty, absolute
vision, complete control.

Everything Is New is in short, a soul record. Recorded over twelve intense months in
producer Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Friendly Fires)’s own west London home studio,
Everything Is New is a giant musical leap forward from this 24 year old Londoner’s
acclaimed debut album. This is a technicolour record full of experimentation and
possibility. The album fuses Peñate’s wide-eyed pop songwriting with the music he’s
always loved and lived, successfully bringing Brazilian Tropicalia, Krautrock, New Orleans
marching bands, Bashment, Afrobeat, lo-fi Hop Hop, Gospel, Reggaeton and Philly Soul
into the mix over a nine track record that delights and surprises at every turn.

The UK press has embraced his new sound and here are some of their accolades...

"It's a fabulous album" - GQ (UK)
"The songs are uniformly great...his songs are gloriously, unabashedly pop" - Guardian
"Jack Penate has made a record that's light on it's feet, has glamour bordering on sex
appeal and that doesn't make you with a fatwa upon it's author. It's a model for second
albums everywhere and a testament fo what can be achieved if you're prepared to take
a long, hard look at the man in the mirror" - NME

The Veils new MP3 and Video plus Summer US Tour!!! 12 Jun 2009

"There's a moment, mere seconds into The Veils' enthralling new record, when the
glorious Finn Andrews howls, 'the complicated beauty of a river run dry,' like every hope
in the universe depends on it. Indeed, Sun Gangs thrashes vividly and wildly from emotion
to emotion with all life's joys, miseries and bemusements visited only at their most distant
and harrowing reaches.  Andrews, one of the best songwriters around, comes on like a
wounded Nick Cave or a seductive Thom Yorke."

"The Veils' previous effort, Nux Vomica, was an undervalued gem of dark, dramatic rock
and roll that came on like the missing link between the Bad Seeds and the best of Morrissey.
On "Sun Gangs," they've scaled back a bit on the edgier side of that equation without
detracting from the sense that everything is very much at stake here."
Blurt

"With Sun Gangs it’s as if they've finished the whole cake and the house burst, bricks and
mortar exploding through the sky like fireworks."
Drowned in Sound

"There’s a lot that could go wrong with this approach on Sun Gangs--but nothing does. For
all the arch drama, the big rock songs on here are frenzied, and the small indie pop songs
are lean and melodic."
Dusted

"Self-indulgent in all the best ways, their third album isn't afraid to explore an idea for nine
minutes, locating that revelatory moment when structure caves into soul."
