Video: Pavement: Hyundai Capital ad

From feedproxy.google.com at 04/12/08 08:45 PM. 0 comments.

Even in our 21st-century global village, it can still take a while for pop culture to travel between continents. Sometime last year, an intrepid YouTube user posted this commercial for South Korean financial services company Hyundai Capital (a subsidiary of the people who make the cars wherein Beck wanted to getwitchoo on Midnite Vultures' "Debra"). The ad uses the intro from "Stereo", the opening track on Pavement's soon-to-be-reissued 1997 long-player Brighten the Corners. Just recently, the ad has been making the blog rounds here in the U.S., so now you too can marvel at this commercial's implication that you could build an entire song out of those first couple of seconds. Lots of details to discern. Lots of details.

[Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Ed. is due 12/09/08 on Matador]

The Very Best: Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are the Very Best

From feedproxy.google.com at 04/12/08 09:00 AM. 0 comments.

Malawian-born, London-based singer Esau Mwamwaya teams with the European production team Radioclit for a hugely eclectic mixtape that veers from South Africa's marabi and kwaito music to Hans Zimmer scores to French and American hip-hop to Michael Jackson. While strong collaborations with M.I.A., Santogold, and Vampire Weekend include some surprising left turns, tracks that lean away from the familiar work even better. [Best New Music]

Grammy Nominations Surprisingly Relevant

From feedproxy.google.com at 04/12/08 05:55 AM. 0 comments.

Well, this was unexpected. Perhaps coming to terms with the fact that increasingly few people give a shit about the Grammys, the Recording Academy tonight announced its list of nominees for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, and those nominees were...shockingly relevant. (Read the whole list HERE.)

You know who got the most nominations? Lil Wayne! He's up for eight Grammys! That's right, not the Eagles or Bob Dylan or John Legend or U2 or some boring old fart your dad likes. Lil Wayne! Pretty risque move, Grammys. I like it.

While it would be pretty awesome if the Grammy for Album of the Year went to an album with THIS FUCKING COVER, it probably isn't going to happen, as Weezy has some pretty stiff competition in that category: Coldplay's Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (which will probably win) Ne-Yo's Year of the Gentleman (!), Robert Plant & Alison Krauss's Raising Sand (which will win if Coldplay doesn't), and-- hey why not?--Radiohead's In Rainbows. Yes, Lil Wayne and Radiohead are competing for Album of the Year. Please dear god, let those two pair up for one of those collaborative medley things that the Grammys always do. Please!

But you know what's even crazier? M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" is up for Record of the Year! It totally won't win (it's up against Coldplay, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Leona Lewis, and Adele), but can you imagine if...

Video: The Raconteurs [ft. Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe]: "Old Enough" (live in studio)

From feedproxy.google.com at 03/12/08 10:00 PM. 0 comments.

This sort of thing became inevitable once Jack White moved from Detroit to Nashville: He already hired the trumpet player from a local Mexican restaurant to play on the Stripes' Icky Thump, and now the Raconteurs have corralled bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs and country singer Ashley Monroe for seven-man/one-woman acoustic jam of "Old Enough", a fairly convoluted song from their recent Consolers of the Lonely. The original version of the song, with its fiddle and acoustic guitar solo, leans toward country, and this version makes that influence explicit.

The most interesting elements are the new ones. With her soft-edged, Parton-esque voice, Ashley Monroe sounds great harmonizing with Brendan Benson White leans in toward acoustic alpha male Skaggs, whose graceful mandolin picking fills the transitions from one section to another. Toward the end, they segue wittily into the Everly Brothers' "Wake Up Little Suzy", and in the video, directed with a shaky hand by photographer Autumn de Wilde, the song ends with repeated punctuation and a smattering of applause for each other. It sounds a bit self-congratulatory, but here's hoping this expanded group has some more crossover-ready covers in them.

The Prodigy Return With Fifth Album, Lots of Touring

From www.pitchforkmedia.com at 02/12/08 07:35 PM. 0 comments.

Those punkin' instigators in the Prodigy are back, and they've got an awfully stern warning for all who dare intrude. Invaders Must Die is the band's fifth studio LP, due March 2 in the UK and March 3 in the States on the band's own Take Me to the Hospital imprint, via Cooking Vinyl.

The 11-track set is bolstered by some drum work from Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, and, of course, plenty of outsized beats besides. Check out the video for the title track below; if you act fast, you can also score a radio edit of the song right here.

The band will spend a good bit of the next several months on the road, including a string of dates in April with a certain Dizzee Rascal.
