Who knew that an NHL star would be into indie Rock? Well we found one - NY Ranger Sean Avery is a huge fan of Basia Bulat and came to see her play at Bowrey Ballroom this past Friday night. And not only is he loving her debut album Oh, My Darling, but he impressed us with his wide-range(r) of knowledge of music and the music biz. Taken By Trees Confirm US Tour!! 17 Jan 2008

TAKEN BY TREES CONFIRM NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
Debut Album Open Field Out Now
“Sweet Child Of Mine” Tour Single To Be Released

Taken By Trees have just confirmed a 2-week North American tour. It will kick off February 22 in New York City. Rough Trade Records will release a single by the band – a cover of Guns and Roses’ “Sweet Child Of Mind” – on 2/19 through itunes. The single will also be available on 7” vinyl at the venues. Taken By Trees debut album Open Field was released last fall on Rough Trade Records.

Taken By Trees is Victoria Bergsman’s new project. If you don’t recognize Victoria Bergsman by name, you may recognize her utterly unique voice, as she was singer and songwriter for The Concretes for 11 years before deciding to leave the band in July 2006. You may also recognize Victoria’s voice from one of the biggest and most popular songs of last year – Peter Bjorn & John’s infectious single “Young Folks.”

On Open Field, Bergsman was aided and abetted by fellow Peter, Bjorn & John co-horts Bjorn Yttling (on various instruments and string arrangements) and John Eriksson (on all ‘very personal’ percussion instruments - marimba and vibraphone). The album also features guitar by Andreas Soderstrom, along with piano arrangements and backing vocals by Verity Susman from Electrelane. Victoria and Bjorn produced the album together.

Just a scant few weeks before the Super Furry Animals embark on their massive US tour to support the release of Hey Venus in more tactile formats, Bunf's lauded soundscapes have hit the Dublab Podcast. The sounds are real-life environs of the SFAs - airport departure lounges, atmospheric noise in backstage areas, train/bus journeys and walking around differents cities from San Fransico to Taiwan - Berlin to Tokyo. These are the “straight from micro-cassette” field recording criteria for Bunf.

Jeffrey Lewis Covers CRASS 08 Nov 2007

In January of 2008 Rough Trade Records will release Jeffrey Lewis' fourth album, 12 Crass Songs. The album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals.

Lewis was raised on New York City's Lower East Side and is a maker of comic books, tragi-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock. For the recording of 12 Crass Songs Lewis was joined by Helen Schreiner on back up vocals. Playing live with his brother Jack on bass, David Beauchamp on drums, The Jeffrey Lewis Band mixes 60s acoustic psychedelia like Pearls Before Swine with the experimental art-punk of the Fall and the urban lyricism of Lou Reed, sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted Sonic Youth.

12 Crass Songs follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs, which was produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Low, Daniel Johnston, etc) and was selected as one of 2006's best albums in Time Out NY, the Boston Globe, CMJ Monthly and elsewhere. Jeffrey's most recent comic book series Fuff is currently up to issue five.

Jeffrey Lewis has toured the US, UK and Europe and his live shows incorporate "low budget videos," Jeff's large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs.
