Praise for Live Music out now (CD/Digital) on Rough Trade (Vinyl available 11/15)
"Suffice to say that Live Music is damn near flawless." Eastern Surf
"The are too many highlights to list... 'Live Music' is fun. It's an ode to the past. And it's one of the better releases this year." The Record (NJ)
"...the band has made a huge stylistic leap, incorporating piano as the base instrument of almost every song on Live Music. The result is a pop record, much cleaner and much better than anything the band has released yet." Dallas Observer
"Live Music marks another winner from Austin's Strange Boys" The Stranger
"the Strange Boys’ greatest strength is making the rootsy sounds they love sound fresh and unfettered... Sambol is evolving into a fine lyricist, equal parts poet and philosopher, as well as an expressive singer." All Music
"You should listen to The Strange Boys' Live Music if you’re in the market for some authentically southern Americana that not only pulls from Petty but also Son House and the drones of The Velvet Underground." Ventvox (4/5 stars)
The Strange Boys are:

Equally informed by Son House as the Velvets, Austin, Texas's contrarians The Strange Boys release their third album, Live Music on October 25 via Rough Trade (TO BE CLEAR "Live" is in the present-tense, as in living the music, THIS IS NOT A LIVE RECORDING).
Born in 2008, The Strange Boys have released two excellent albums, The Strange Boys and Girls Club (2009, the original sessions of which were equally botched and scrapped production attempts by the late Jay Reatard as well as the band) and 2010's Be Brave.
Half (side A) of Live Music was recorded in April 2011 at the Austin home of producer/Spoon drummer Jim Eno. The second half (side B) was recorded in December 2010 at producer Mike McHugh’s Distillery, the same studio that Be Brave was recorded in.

BRITISH SEA POWER NEW NSFW VIDEO and 3/21 LETTERMAN Performance announced! 11 Mar 2011
NSFW VIDEO FOR "WHO'S IN CONTROL?" PREMIERES TODAY!
BAND TO PERFORM ON LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN ON MARCH 21ST!
U.S. TOUR ALSO BEGINS MARCH 21ST!
A lot of very exciting things are going on as British Sea Power gear up for their first U.S. tour dates since 2008! These upcoming shows are in support of their latest album, Valhalla Dancehall, which came out via Rough Trade in January of this year.
Firstly, today marks the worldwide premiere of the music video for album lead-off track, "Who's In Control?" which is NSFW, albeit tastefully (ie there is some nudity involved).
The video for "Who's In Control?" was conceived as a raucous juxtaposition of sex and protest, party and revolt. The video's directors, Bajir Cannon and Bridget Palardy, have delivered a video of real humanity that references adolescent political struggle typified by the recent UK student protests, while embracing the idea that even in the midst of tumult, perhaps especially then, there is a need for release.
Cannon and Palardy have seamlessly integrated real protest footage (culled with permission from a variety of internet sources shot by people from all over the world - Todd Kappelt, Adam Hinton, Miguel Barbosa, Matthew Bowron, and Jonathan James Harrison) with a fictional narrative and small cast to create a compelling expression of disorder and abandon.
You can view the video on the band's website: http://www.britishseapower.co.uk/ or through this direct link http://vimeo.com/20887488
An MP3 download for "Who's In Control?" is available here:http://promo.roughtraderecords.com/britishseapower/whosincontrol.mp3
Secondly, we are pleased to confirm that on March 21st (the first date of their upcoming tour), British Sea Power are set to perform "Who's In Control?" on Late Show With David Letterman! http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_show/
There's more!
SuperGlued is presenting an interactive contest where fans who attend the upcoming dates can compete via social networking sites to win prizes! More info on that can be found here http://superglued.com/britishseapower

WARPAINT ANNOUNCES SPRING TOUR 18 Jan 2011
For immediate release:
We are excited to announce a Spring tour by WARPAINT. Their explosive live shows have been blowing people's minds and we're happy that they are returning to share their energy for a month-long US tour! The trek starts in San Francisco on March 16th, and continues through to mid-April. All dates are below.
Warpaint is a 4-piece, all female band from LA. In existence since 2004, The Fool is the full-length they have been threatening to make all along - and it proves that the wait - and the search for new drummer Stella Mozgawa, was well worth it. Rough Trade released The Fool late in 2010.
Their former drummer is none-other than actress Shannyn Sossamon, who directed their music video for "Undertow", currently in heavy rotation on MTV. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMkqbY0oGKQ
MTV also recently filmed one of the band's New York shows for their "live in NYC" series.
Click below to select your choice of six songs, and watch an interview.
http://www.mtv.com/music/live_in_nyc/warpaint/main.jhtml
"Bass lines snake through a gauzy swirl of guitars, underpinned by surprisingly funky drumming. The singers seem to be almost conversing, finishing each other's thoughts as they seduce all who come within earshot" - CHICAGO TRIBUNE, #10 album of 2010
"While too many indie girl groups seem content to rebuild the Wall of Sound brick by brick, this Los Angeles quartet dedicate their hypnotic harmonies and guitars to a different cause: the House of Ian Curtis." - SPIN 8/10
TOUR DATES:
Wed, 3/16 San Francisco, CA The Independent
Thu, 3/17 Eugene, OR WOW Hall
Fri, 3/18 Portland, OR Wonder Ballroom
Sat, 3/19 Vancouver, BC Biltmore Cabaret
Sun, 3/20 Seattle, WA Neumos
Wed, 3/23 Minneapolis, MI Varsity Theater
Thu, 3/24 Chicago, IL Lincoln Hall
Fri, 3/25 Cleveland, OH Beachland Ballroom
Sat, 3/26 Toronto, ON Wrongbar
Sun, 3/27 Montreal, PQ La Sala Rossa
Tue, 3/29 Boston, MA Paradise
Wed, 3/30 Brooklyn, NY Brooklyn Bowl
Thu, 3/31 New York, NY Bowery Ballroom
Fri, 4/1 Philadelphia, PA Theater of Living Arts

Sun, 4/3 Raleigh, NC Kings Barcade and Tavern
Tue, 4/5 Nashville, TN Mercy Lounge
Thu, 4/7 New Orleans, LA Republic
Fri, 4/8 Houston, TX Fitzgeralds
Sat, 4/9 Austin, TX La Zona Rosa
Mon, 4/11 Dallas, TX The Loft
*supported by PVT and The Family Band on all tour dates.
In addition to the album, the live shows have been receiving amazing reviews....
"It’s easy to be a great drummer by being loud, but Stella Mozgawa finds all the other ways. She's dense, leaving little air in her patterns. She’s not overly forceful, sometimes sounding as if she were nudging the rhythm out. And she’s reliably in the pocket, the steady force that sets the mood and pace for the rest of the band. Thursday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg that band, Warpaint, followed Ms. Mozgawa wherever she took it, its narcotizing hum swept along by a rollicking thunderstorm" - THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Their stupendous debut full-length, The Fool, triangulates Moon Pix–era Cat Power's ghostly, morbid, gorgeous bedroom folk with the Slits' lithe, muscular post-punk, but onstage at the Webster Hall Studio Wednesday night, the latter style dominates, thanks mostly to drummer Stella Mozgawa, a dervish of brash snare cracks, liquid drum rolls, emphatic soundman-hailing gestures, and rampant giggling." - VILLAGE VOICE

Here’s what the band has to say about it: "The song 'Living Is So Easy' features electronic keyboards, some Louis Vuitton and clay pigeons. It’s a mixture of Serge Gainsbourg and Ralf and Florian era Kraftwerk with a sprinkle of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. It’s our most electronic song to date, but it’s not doom 1980s electronica. This is the high life."

BRITISH SEA POWER announce NEW digital/vinyl Zeus E.P. and make MP3 of title track available! 23 Sep 2010
BRITISH SEA POWER
*Announce NEW seven-track digital EP on Rough Trade!
*Free download of title track "Zeus" available now!
*Full length to come in 2011

We are pleased to announce the release of Zeus E.P, the all-new seven-track EP from British Sea Power! Nikita Khruschev, Rick Stein and Wurzel Gummidge are are all alluded to on the EP, which comes out in the States digitally on October 5th and limited edition 12" vinyl on October 12th through Rough Trade.
The EP was recorded in East Sussex and on the Isle Of Skye and starts with two seven-minute tracks that set the tone for a collection of songs that is wonderfully all-over-the-place. The title track "Zeus" sets new standards for progressive garage-rock – a recording that suggests waking from the crazed impetus of a lusty dream full of dead Soviet leaders, TV chefs and... scarecrows. Following this is second track "Cleaning Out The Rooms" which is an expansive and reflective beauty. Elsewhere on the 43 minute long EP is radiant prettiness and care-in-the-community exclamation. (Please note that only the physical 12” format runs to 43 mins, the digital version is slightly shorter). This EP is an unwashed, wild-eyed precursor to the fourth BSP studio album, set for release in January 2011. Of the EP tracks, only "Cleaning Out The Rooms" will be included on the upcoming full length.
Sample an edit of the title track "Zeus" by clicking this direct link, and you can find a widget which includes an embed code here http://www.roughtraderecords.com/britishseapower/3479/ye-gods-brand-new-7-track-british-sea-power-ep

Dylan LeBlanc to set out on the IF TIME WAS FOR WASTING INSTORE TOUR 23 Aug 2010

We're excited to announce that Dylan LeBlanc will be hitting the road in early September for what has been dubbed the "If Time Was For Wasting Instore Tour" which will have him performing at select record stores in the South!
His incredible debut album Pauper's Field is out this week on Rough Trade.
A mere 20 years old, Dylan is a native of Shreveport, LA and now splits his time between there and Nashville. He started playing guitar at age 7, and writing songs just a few years later. The songs on this debut are beautifully nurtured, gently astonishing, stop-you-in-your-tracks reveries - gilded with strings, smokey organ lines, and keening pedal steel.
Be sure to take a moment and watch this session video of Dylan performing a haunting rendition of his song "Emma Hartley" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHlHAg_9Z7U
"This 19-year-old Louisiana boy sang with a world-weary tone that belied his young age. Blending a little of Jim James' reverb-drenched croon with Neil Young's raspy, high registers, recent Rough Trade signing LeBlanc sings with an easygoing assurednes" -SPIN.COM
"He just might be the next brooding Townes Van Zandt among us." - AMERICAN SONGWRITER

Have you met DYLAN LEBLANC? 23 Jun 2010

Rough Trade records is excited to introduce you to Dylan LeBlanc. Practically raised in the famed Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, 20-year-old Dylan LeBlanc is a rare breed. Despite his age, Dylan's worn yearning voice already has the mark of aged experience. Neither the feel nor sound of the album, nor the haunted ghost summoning songs he has written, can be faked. Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee signed Dylan and wrote his account of how he came to his attention, which is a great read and below.
Rough Trade will release Dylan’s debut album, Pauper’s Field on August 24th, and you can hear an mp3 and watch a video for “If Time Was For Wasting” now. The song has also been released as a single and is available digitally and via 7” b/w “Jack”.

“If Time Was For Wasting” seems to be wrenched from the heart of ever-present currents in Deep South life - where the pull of the past is unavoidable. "Admittedly I was drinking a good bit myself, and when I wrote the song I was thinking about an arrogant ignorant man and the woman he was with. It has a lot to do with the culture around here. I pictured a man walking into a room where he lives with an angry wife.”
Dylan is a native of Shreveport, LA and now splits his time between there and Nashville. He started playing guitar at age 7, and writing songs just a few years later. The songs on this debut are beautifully nurtured, gently astonishing, stop you in your tracks reveries - gilded with strings, smokey organ lines, and keening pedal steel.
Dylan will be making his very first trip to New York in July for a very special performance with his band at Joe’s Pub on Wednesday, July 21st.

ABOUT SIGNING DYLAN LEBLANC – by Geoff Travis
Dylan LeBlanc came into my life quite by chance. A friend called Jon Tiven was visiting from Nashville. He was trying to interest me in a Souhern Rock Opera that he had written and recorded with a view to getting me to release it. It has some illustrious soul singers from yesteryear singing lead on some of the tracks. However I am pathologically averse to going back into the past, having flirted disastrously with this idea previously. The Sandie Shaw project instigated by Morrissey springs to mind, being in a hotel room with the lovely Roger McGuinn and having to tell him that the new songs he had just played me on his twelve string guitar were not actually my cup of tea, trying to convince Arthur Lee that David Roback should be producing his new record, when all he wanted to talk about was the fact that he had himself played every note on the early Love records, are just a few examples.
I was chatting to Jon and his partner Sally when they casually mentioned that they had recently seen a young man that had completely mesmerized them. They said he had a voice that fell somewhere between Ray La Montagne and Neil Young and that he was one of the best they had ever seen.
They were not his managers or his agents or his lawyers or his accountants. They just liked him as an artist. Now these two people are not just ordinary music folk. They count Steve Cropper amongst their best friends and they seem able to get Teenie Hodges, the sublime guitar player who adorns so many great Al Green records, on the phone. Something in me snapped to attention and I asked who this young man was that they were describing. They said he was called Dylan LeBlanc and he lives in or near Shreveport in Louisiana and they had seen him play in a small club in Nashville.
Dylan is now signed to Rough Trade and his story is just beginning. But like all stories of this kind, he has been preparing for it all his life. He was signed to Fame Music which is the publishing arm that grew out of the great Muscle Shoals recording complex. Rick Hall is it's head and you can find his name on the credits of some of the greatest records to ever come out of the American South. Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin amongst them. Rick signed Dylan to Fame Music. He was signed as soon as he was legally of age to do so. Part of the deal was that Dylan got access to the studio, where he recorded his debut album.
Pauper’s Field, which was mixed by Trina Shoemaker in Nashville in March of this year will be his first release. Dylan turned 20 years of age recently and he has been performing since he was 15 years old. Playing around the Louisiana
area, often travelling by himself to play in a tiny bar hundreds of miles from home, learning his craft and trying out new songs - always writing and trying out new ideas and soaking up the rich culture of his southern homeland.
He sounds like he has lived several lives already and has the melancholy soul of a great Southern soul singer many times his age. In reality he is just a young man making his first steps into the world of music. A world he has had no choice but to participate in. It is in his blood and it is in his soul. I feel lucky to be able to help bring these songs to your attent

Basia Bulat playing select U.S. Tour Dates in February and March! 18 Feb 2010
Basia Bulat has been covering a lot of ground in her native Canada. Luckily we are not forsaken, as Basia will be performing select U.S. Tour Dates in the next couple of months! Her most recent release, Heart Of My Own just came out on Rough Trade.
"Heart of My Own" bubbles with quiet intensity: Understated guitar and banjo, minute string arrangements, a dampened floor tom and distant multi-part vocal harmonies place the focus on Bulat's unwavering voice, a single powerful element in a beautiful but unforgiving landscape." NPR - Song Of The Day
"... it's her rare, extraordinary voice that makes her a fresh find in the notoriously musty folk-pop bin. Graceful and incandescent, confident but approachable, her alto's the aural equivalent of the perfect party host who makes every guest not only welcome, but certain they're the most important person in the room." Pitchfork
"Who's singing in the new Subaru Outback commercial in which a man loses his sunglasses, then finds them in the hood of his sweatshirt? And what's the song? The song is Before I Knew, by Canadian singer/songwriter Basia Bulat. Her new album, Heart of My Own, showcases Bulat's wide-ranging influences, from soul music to American folk." USA Weekend
"This 25-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has one of those powerful, lilting, “Who is that?’ voices that immediately grabs your attention both with its technique and its unbridled emotion. Her new album, “Heart of My Own,” is a worthy follow-up to her 2007 debut, “Oh, My Darling,” showcasing both that amazing voice and her open-hearted songwriting." Wisconsin State Journal

Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard Confirm October Tour Dates with Dr. Dog New MP3 for Roll Bus Roll AVAILABLE NOW 02 Sep 2009

Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard are set to hit the road again in support of 'Em Are I!
Jeffrey's fifth full-length for Rough Trade has all the qualities you love about
his previous work. 'Em Are I is comic, tragic, irreverent, intelligent, but it's his unrelenting
honesty that brings everything together and gives 'Em Are I the idiosyncratic stamp of a
Jeffrey Lewis album.
To date Jeffrey has toured with the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks,
Super Furry Animals, The Mountain Goats, The Cribs, and most recently, Au Revoir
Simone. Next week, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard will be teaming up with
Akron/Family, and have now confirmed a run of dates with Dr. Dog in October!

"All of these are very good tunes, but it's the heartfelt content at the album's thematic core
that makes 'Em Are I' not just Lewis' most consistent album, but also his most truly affecting
and easily his most successful outing to date." All Music Guide

Taken By Trees - new album in September!!! 01 Jul 2009
Taken By Trees announce new album East Of Eden
Release date: September 8th, 2009
Rough Trade records is excited to release East Of Eden, the new album by Taken By Trees. It will be released on September 8th, and is the result of an extraordinarily adventurous recording process in Pakistan with local musicians. The album will also come with a short film that was shot in Pakistan while recording.
Taken by Trees is the nom de plume of Victoria Bergsman, previously best known for her work with The Concretes and Peter Bjorn & John’s worldwide smash hit single "Young Folks". This new offering follows in the footsteps of Taken By Trees critically acclaimed debut album Open Field which was released in 2007.
Victoria wanted to travel to record in a mysterious, relatively uncharted area, and avoid the usual clinical studio experience, which she has always disliked and found to be an essentially uncreative environment. In order to provide herself with both an interesting challenge and an inspirational recording environment, she chose Pakistan. The rhythm, drums and flutes of Pakistani music had long captivated Victoria and this coupled with a deep admiration for one of her favorite singers Abida Parveen and the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan helped her choose Pakistan as the place to record her new album.
While it’s practically a miracle that the album was made at all, the experience and environment there has created a masterful work with a depth of expression and feeling that is breathtaking. Victoria is one of the very few, if not the only, Western women, to record in this region, and the bureaucracy, cultural differences and prejudices she had to overcome to see this project through are beyond belief.

We Are The Wiley: A Benefit for Jon Wiley featuring ADAM GREEN. 01 Jul 2009
A circle of Brooklyn-based friends have joined together to throw a benefit for beloved, local musician, Jon Wiley. We Are the Wiley: A Benefit Concert for Jon Wiley will feature Adam Green, Lightspeed Champion, DJ Johnny Tropical, and Chairlift at The Shank—an art space and concert venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn—on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 8PM.
On March 5, 2009, professional guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist, Jon Wiley awoke without feeling or mobility in his arms and legs. He was subsequently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and incurred more than $30,000 worth of medical bills for his week-long hospital stay. After a lengthy recovery process, Jon has regained most feeling in his limbs and has gone on in recent months to record and perform with Lightspeed Champion, Adam Green, and his solo project, SpaceCamp. However, he is still without the means to afford his own healthcare.
Join us to celebrate the extraordinary talent of Jon Wiley, and raise funds to cover the expenses of a musician in need. This is a concrete opportunity to help a friend who, like so many artists and musicians in the United States, lack affordable healthcare. Jon’s story highlights the importance of healthcare for every person and the value of living each day to the fullest.

1990s to TOUR US May through June!!! 01 Apr 2009
Glasgow's 1990s have just released their second album "Kicks" on Rough Trade.
Rolling Stone gave it 3 1/2 stars: 'On their second disc, the trio pump out tightly wound,
Seventies-sounding punk with a dozen near-perfect tunes about American pastimes such
as smoking pot on a lazy afternoon ("Vondelpark"), popping Xanax ("Kickstrasse") and moving
to California to enroll in Scientology ("Everybody Please Relax").'
Now, life may just imitate art for the trio when they hit our shores for a US tour that starts
in late May on the east coast, and takes them across the country through mid June!
1990s are now: Jackie McKeown (vocals on most songs, guitars),
Dino Bardot (bass, vocals on two songs), and Michael McGaughrin (drums
and vocals on 4 songs)
Check out the MP3 for "The Box" which got a 4 star track review from Rolling Stone:

More On The New Super Furry Animals Album!! 23 Feb 2009
Super Furry Animals are never ones to stay still creatively, and with their forthcoming (currently untitled) ninth studio album they have decided to document the process on four individual hand-held cameras.. But this will be no ordinary "the making of the album" story; it's a series of Warhol-like observations, of a band putting the finishing touches to songs, a celebration of the banal nature of the mixing process. Whole chunks of time seem to vanish at twice the speed over a slow game of darts or the making of a cup of tea as a song is played on repeat 26 times on the mixing console.
Inspired by Mike Figgis' groundbreaking film Time Code, the episodes will be released in 21 individual episodes starting today, February 23, through the band's own website / podcast series.
www.superfurry.com
'Ah! Greetings friends, join us for the next few weeks as we finish up our new album for your ears. We have borrowed 4 video cameras from friends and family and we will document events as they unfold, hopefully with as little drama as possible.'

BRITISH SEA POWER SOUNDTRACK FOR RENOWNED 1934 FILM, LIVE PERFORMANCE AT BFI 23/4/09 20 Feb 2009
BRITISH SEA POWER SOUNDTRACK FOR RENOWNED 1934 FILM, LIVE PERFORMANCE AT BFI 23/4/09 - Out May 5th On Rough Trade
Watch a section here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0RAdfrQwvo (be sure to click the 'view in high quality link')
British Sea Power have written and recorded a new soundtrack for the 1934 film Man Of Aran. The film is being re-released on DVD with the new BSP soundtrack - a release which will be preceded by the band performing the soundtrack live to the film at BFI Southbank on April 23rd. The BSP Man Of Aran package includes two discs - the re-scored Man Of Aran DVD, plus the soundtrack by itself on CD, out May 5th on Rough Trade.
“It’s a wonderful film,” says BSP guitarist Noble. “The images vary between huge drama and a brilliant kind of ridiculousness - check out the amazing foot-wide bobbled berets that the fishermen wear. It’s a great look, like a 1930s Irish version of Jack White or Kraftwerk. It’s a film that’s also relevant to the current era – a time when the idea of living a simpler life is in the air. The film shows something I'd like to think I could do, but know I never will.”
Man Of Aran is a powerful and provocative dramatized documentary from the late American filmmaker Robert J Flaherty. In a series of startling black-and-white sequences the film presents daily life on the inhospitable Aran islands on the west coast of Ireland. The film was both celebrated and controversial on its release.
The film was created from half a million feet of film shot by Flaherty while living closely with the islanders. But Man Of Aran isn’t a straightforward documentary. The ‘family’ at the centre of the film weren’t related, rather a group of islanders cast as the family unit by Flaherty. The fishing expedition for basking sharks which forms the film’s dramatic heart was based around methods that hadn’t been employed on the Aran Islands for decades. Blending reality and staged elements, Flaherty arrived at a compelling document that captures the elemental power of the island’s past and present. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1935 Venice Film Festival and the eminent film critic Pauline Kael described it as, "The greatest film tribute to man's struggle against a hostile nature."
Rough Trade To Put Out The Veils' New Record "Sung Gangs" 18 Feb 2009
THE VEILS RELEASE SUN GANG -- APRIL 7TH ON ROUGH TRADE
Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce the stunning new album from The Veils, Sun Gangs, out April 7th and produced by Graham Sutton & Bernard Butler.
The Veils are Finn Andrews, (vocals, guitar, piano, New Zealand) Sophia Burn, (bass, New Zealand) Dan Raishbrook (guitar, odd noise, England) and Henning Dietz (drums, Germany). Sun Gangs is their third album, and without a doubt their finest to date.
By turns epic, desolate, wildly romantic and anguished, Sun Gangs is a bold and distinctive record described by Finn as “a very modern mixture of prayers, love letters and personal record keeping”. Produced by Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker / British Sea Power / Bark Psychosis) it is their most ambitious record yet ranging from the yearning elegy of ‘Sit Down By The Fire’, to the charred, mantis-like groove of ‘Killed By The Boom’ - this is a record unlike many we are likely to hear this year.
So many stories, words, tones and ideas punctuate its gradually unfolding landscape as that incomparable voice cries and hollers. “’Sit Down By The Fire’ is about watching something collapse, and it being quite pretty to look at,” offers Finn. “’Killed By The Boom’ is possibly about The Wire’s Omar Little. ‘It Hits Deep’ is about being a man, in a bar alone, on a tropical island resort, as the light gets dim and the world goes fuzzy. ‘Larkspur’ is somewhere else entirely.”
“I really wanted to write something that hangs together in perhaps a not so obvious way; not just some collection of singles but a real voyage into something, something strange and unspecific but totally emotionally consuming. It’s also kinda just a break-up record in many ways.”
Finn’s father Barry Andrews was a founding member of the highly influential group XTC in the late 1970s, later going on to tour with the likes of Robert Fripp & Brian Eno, Iggy Pop & David Bowie.
In younger days in Auckland, thousands of miles away from his father, Finn sang at a folk club up a volcano, and sidelined a desire to paint when he began hearing musicians like Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen, Roy Orbison & Bob Dylan - contemplating that there was perhaps more to life than the bleeping Eighties electronica and early days of New Wave which had surrounded his first London foray.
In Sun Gangs The Veils have brought Finn’s early influences full circle, and created a record that truly lives up to the huge promise and talent that they have always exhibited.

1990s' New Album 16 Jan 2009
1990s’ New Album Kicks – Release Date: March 24, 2009
Rough Trade Records are proud to announce the approaching release of 1990s second collection of knock out songs, Kicks, which is to be released on March 24, 2009. The group's cult hit loaded and hugely acclaimed debut album, Cookies, was released in 2007.
Kicks features more sassy, infectiously catchy songs about Glasgow and girls in the main, but also references Mongolian warlords, bears, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Baader-Meinhof and Scientology. Most of the songs on Kicks are anecdotes about ex, current, future and fictional girlfriends.
The album was recorded at Edwyn Collins’ West Heath Yard studio in London and it was produced by Bernard Butler. Kicks is the sound of a group careering head first, inspired by where they come from and what they can potentially do, into further adventures in sound and visions. Inspiration was taken from everything from Scary Monsters/Golden Years-era Bowie and his work with Brian Eno & Tony Visconti to Jay-Z through to Hall & Oates, the chops of Hot Chocolate and even the folk licks of Richard Thompson. Sonically Kicks is a rock record, but 1990s' intention was to make it sound slightly alien too.
1990s have always been a three piece. In common with Franz Ferdinand, their origins trace back to two of Glasgow’s most influential and cult groups, The Yummy Fur and V Twin. 1990s in fact started off as 2/3 Yummy Fur, 1/3 V Twin on Cookies. For this new album they wanted to try 2/3 V Twin, 1/3 Yummy Fur, so Dino Bardot has now replaced Jamie McMorrow on the Bass guitar.
The album’s a non-stop assault of pop gems. “59” eulogises the 59 bus in Pollokshields, which comes approximately once per lifetime and goes from Narnia to Brigadoon via Pollokshields. As Michael, who sings it, explains "It’s the only bus you want to get on in Pollokshields, even if it’s going in the wrong direction. The song’s about me taking this bus and checking out the girls… with gammy eyes."
1990s' vocal harmonies on this album have come into their own and lead vocal duties are shared amongst the group much more so than on Cookies. Michael sings four songs, Dino sings two and Jackie sings the rest. “Kickstrasse” features Jackie addressing German 1970s terrorist group Baader-Meinhof, with help from Kate Jackson (of The Long Blondes) on backing vocals. On “Everybody Please Relax” Jackie threatens to move to Hollywood and become a Scientologist. Michael and Dino hope that he doesn't.
Of the songs Dino sings, “I Don't Even Know What That Is” recollects an alarming proposition that was made to him after the group supported Roky Erikkson at a Halloween Party in San Francisco wearing outfits borrowed from a porn studio.
So remember, keep an eye out for the number 59 bus from Pollokshields, you never know where it might take you! There will be extensive touring around the record’s release in March.
1990s are Jackie McKeown (vocals, guitars), Dino Bardot (bass, vocals), and Michael McGaughrin (drums and vocals).

30 years of Rough Trade + commemorative shows (in the UK) w/Jarvis & Jeffrey Lewis! 10 Nov 2008
JARVIS COCKER - ROUGH TRADE RECORDS
LOOKING ROUGH AT 30
30 Years Of Rough Trade Records
• Rough Trade Records 30th Birthday UK Tour
• Jeffrey Lewis added to the bill
• Jarvis Cocker to headline, showcasing new material plus special Rough Trade guest support
• Forthcoming BBC Documentary entitled "Do It Yourself - The Story Of Rough Trade" in October
Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee at Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce a UK tour to commemorate the label's historic 30th Birthday. Taking in Sheffield, London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham it will be headlined by our own incomparable Jarvis Cocker, and now we can announce that our own Jeffrey Lewis will be joining the celebrations. A video of Jeffrey performing 'A Quick Biography Of Barack Obama', his comic book / ode in support to the Democratic presidential candidate has become something of a youtube sensation, see it here.
With recent scorching US live shows at New York's Music Hall of Williamsburg and Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival (where he showcased blistering material from his forthcoming record due mid 2009) still ringing in the ears of the lucky who managed to witness them, there's no doubt that Jarvis is in fine form, and these dates represent a rare opportunity to catch him in full flow.
JARVIS COCKER :
"Strangely enough, this is also the 30th anniversary of my first involvement with making music (the first incarnation of Pulp was formed during an Economics lesson towards the end of October 1978). How could I have known then that our two destinies would become so intertwined? I'm proud to be part of these birthday celebrations - I know there's an awful lot of Anniversary Culture out there but this is one that's actually worth celebrating: Rough Trade has always been about discovering the new, exploring the unknown & giving a voice to those who would otherwise remain unheard. And they're still doing it 30 years on. This is no dewy-eyed nostalgia trip - it's an on-going revolution. Stand up & be counted! (Actually, comfortable seating IS available in most of the venues - should you require it)."
Live Dates (sorry folks, all in the UK!)

Nov 26 London Shepherds Bush Empire*
Nov 28 Edinburgh Picture House*

Sad news from The Long Blondes 20 Oct 2008
from their myspace page today...sad news from Sheffield. We wish Dorian the best on his road to recovery, and we will miss working with them greatly. They are a class act, and a very hardworking band that deserves nothing but the best.
Monday, October 20, 2008
We have decided to call it a day.
The main reason for this is that I suffered from a stroke in June and unfortunately I do not know when / if I will be well enough to play guitar again.
On behalf of the band I'd like to say a big thank you to anyone who ever came to one of our shows, bought one of our records or danced to one of our songs in a club. Thank you, if it wasn't for you the whole thing would have been pointless.
Finally on a personal note, thanks for all your well wishing messages.

Emiliana Torrini is so talented and amazing and gorgeous - we could go on - and we're really happy that the fine folks that handle music for Grey's Anatomy agree. Her song "Jungle Drum" was featured on last night's episode, and her music has been on the show a couple of times in past seasons.
You can stream the song here thanks for our friends at NPR

JEFFREY LEWIS CONFIRMS U.S. TOUR !!! 24 Sep 2008
JEFFREY LEWIS CONFIRMS U.S. TOUR
Over 130 Shows Performed This Year
Lewis Blogs For The NY Times
New Issue Of Fuff Released
Entire World Concludes: Jeffrey Lewis Is The Hardest Working Man In Show Biz
The Jeffrey Lewis Band has confirmed a tour of North America this fall. Kicking off in Vancouver, BC on October 23 the tour takes them across the US and will end in NYC in mid November. His latest (and 4th) album 12 Crass Songs was released earlier this year by Rough Trade Records. The album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked by Jeffrey into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals.
Since the release of 12 Crass Songs Lewis has been working almost non-stop. He has crisscrossed the US and Europe with his band, playing over 130 shows thus far in 2008, including numerous festivals, solo acoustic shows, and support tours with the likes of his fans The Mountain Goats, Steven Malkmus & the Jicks, British Sea Power, Super Furry Animals, the Cribs and Los Campesinos! On those tours Lewis has been highlighting the tracks from 12 Crass Songs but this fall run will see him performing some of his older work as well as trying out new material.
Most rock bands would stop there – an album release and subsequent tours are all that is expected! But not Lewis. On a recent and rare break he put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and, joining the likes of Rosanne Cash, Andrew Bird and Suzanne Vega, was a contributor to The New York Times blog “Measure For Measure” ruminating on the question, “What is an original song, when it comes to folk music (or any genre)?” Needless to say this subject kicked off plenty of debate in the comments section. http://measureformeasure.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/23/jeffrey-lewis/
Not only is Lewis an excellent songwriter he’s also the critically acclaimed creator of the comic book series Fuff (in fact his live shows incorporate "low budget videos," Jeff's large illustrations displayed to accompany certain songs). In 2008, amongst all the touring and opining for the NY Times, Jeffrey also found the time to pen another issue that has just been released.
Come see Jeffrey before he finally does take a much-deserved break (where he will most likely spend his time writing a new album!). Tour dates are below.

BASIA BULAT CONFIRMS SEPTEMBER DATES IN THE U.S.
Shortlisted For Canada’s Polaris Prize
Headlining show at NYC’s Highline Ballroom on September 19
In support of her debut album Oh, My Darling (Rough Trade Records), Basia Bulat has confirmed a short US tour this September. The first date is in Louisville, KY on September 11 and the tour winds up on the 20th of the month in Cambridge, MA. She will be headlining The Highline Ballroom in New York City on September 19.
Since the release of Oh, My Darling, Bulat and her band have been crisscrossing the US touring on their own and with the likes of DeVotchKa and St. Vincent earning the admiration of fans and critics along the way. The admiration is no less in her home country of Canada where she was recently shortlisted for this year’s Polaris Prize (the winner will be announced on September 29).
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia’s picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukulele, sax and flute. In high school her instrument was the upright bass – a lone girl among “eight-foot-tall guys in the back of the orchestra, goofing off with the tubas”. There’s a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy.
In the summer of 2006, Basia went to live in Montreal. Through friends she met Howard Bilerman, an engineer and co-owner of the famed Hotel 2 Tango studio. Basia cashed some student loans to record with Bilerman. It was ultimately these rough early takes, hoarse with excitement that formed the bulk of Oh, My Darling. Despite the original intention, these tracks are breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia. There are strings, yes, and acoustic guitar, but also a frantic drum-kit gallop; the influence of the spirits of wild Jeff Magnum, big-voiced Odetta, Emily Dickinson and all those boisterous soul-music singles. It’s this spark that sets Basia Bulat apart from the raft of typical singer-songwriters.
THE VEILS Fall U.S. Tour!!! 06 Aug 2008

The Veils are a London based quartet (with ties to Oklahoma City!) who will be coming back to our shores this fall for a slew of dates supporting Liam Finn!!! They'll be playing new songs from the currently untitled (working title: LOL) follow up to last year's critically acclaimed Nux Vomica released by Rough Trade.
Finn Andrews weathered many false starts with various line ups in earlier incarnations of the band. The Veils are now comprised of singer/guitarist Finn Andrews, Sophia Burn (bass), Henning Dietz (drums) and Dan Raishbrook (guitar and noize-wiv-a-Z).
Re: Oklahoma. Amidst a slew of dates from coast to coast, they found time to become Oklahoma City locals for three months, wrestle snakes, find a ghost town, lose their innocence, and document it all in a much loved tour diary, sections of which, including "The Bit Where Henning Totals a Segway" are currently being made into a MAJOR motion picture starring Billy Zane, Alan Cumming, and a bawling toddler named "Hero."

Congrats To A Couple Of Our Canadian Artists! 08 Jul 2008
Canada day may officially take place on July 1 but for us at the Beggars Group USA office this year we're going to celebrate it this week. Why? Two of our artists - Basia Bulat and Holy Fuck - have been nominated for the Polaris Prize. Basia for her album Oh, My Darling and Holy Fuck for their album LP. The long list had 40 potential winners and yesterday, July 7, the list was pared down to just 10.
The Polaris Prize is Canada's equivalent to Britain's esteemed Mercury Prize.
Who is going to get bragging rights and the fat $20,000** check? We all have to wait until September 29 when the winner will be announced at a special ceremony in Toronto.

New Emiliana Torrini album coming! 01 Jul 2008
Rough Trade is delighted to announce a stunning new album from the hugely talented Emiliana Torrini.
Hear the title track: "Me And Armini"
Following her critically acclaimed albums Love In The Time Of Science and her Rough Trade debut Fisherman's Woman, the forthcoming Me And Armini (release date September 9th) sees her working once again with her long time producer/collaborator Dan Carey, resulting in what we feel is destined to be one of the loveliest albums of 2008.
Me And Armini is a hugely ambitious and aspirational pop record with Emiliana’s soaring voice centre stage, bolstered by a rich gamut of musical styles. From the summery skank of the title track to the surging, breathless “Jungle Drum” and the yearning “Big Jumps” and much more in between, Me And Armini is a truly fantastic album. For those not in the know, the pedigree paring of Torrini's songwriting and Carey's sonic alchemy (currently being put to work on the new Franz Ferdinand and recent Hot Chip records) has previously combined to world-beating effect when they co-wrote/produced a number-one hit for Kylie Minogue in the shape of the huge-selling pop smash “Slow” as well as contributing “Gollum's Song” to the multi-platinum soundtrack to The Lord Of The Rings.
Emiliana Torrini is half Icelandic, half Italian. She grew up in Iceland in a town outside Reykjavik and spent her childhood summers with her grandmother in the far east of Iceland out in the wild, spacious countryside. Her teen summers were spent in Germany with her Italian uncle. Her worldwide debut album, 1999’s Love In The Time Of Science, was produced by Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears and was a gorgeous electronic trip-hop influenced album. Her second album, Fisherman’s Woman was a little closer to Nick and included the song “Honeymoon Child“ written by Smog’s Bill Callahan, who Emiliana spent some time writing with in the US. Fisherman’s Woman’s theme was loss – sometimes dripping with sadness but more frequently imbued with almost magical optimism.
Me and Armini will be released by Rough Trade in the US on September 9th, and marks another new chapter in Emiliana’s impressive career.

Adam Green to open for Dr.John! 11 Jun 2008
In a concert combination that will make your head explode, our own ADAM GREEN will be opening for DR. JOHN on TUESDAY, JUNE 17th at the HIGHLINE BALLROOM !
I've said it before and I'll say it again - drop any preconceived notions you have about Adam - because he's made an amazing record that is truly impressive.
Have a listen to his gorgeous song "Getting Led"
http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/adamgreen_getting_led.mp3
It's a very special night for the both of them. It's Dr. John's cd release show, and Dr. John is one of Adam's heroes, so opening up for him is a true career highlight. I asked Adam to explain to me what this opening slot meant to him, and this is what he said.
"Dr. John is an adorable man. I was originally attracted to his zu-zu man persona, but now I would happily flip through his hat collection. My favorite song of his is "Black Widow Spider." It's hard to describe the type of music that is... it's almost goth-funk I guess. I dig goth music 'cause I'm a dancing maniac these days. I buy a lot of Dr. John's records on ebay.. Maybe if he hears my good music, he would allow me to write some of his new album with him. Since my keyboard player is having a baby soon, maybe Dr. John could play keyboards with me at Reading Festival. You never know because I get lucky sometimes."

Taken By Trees Confirm US Tour!! 17 Jan 2008
Debut Album Open Field Out Now
“Sweet Child Of Mine” Tour Single To Be Released
Taken By Trees have just confirmed a 2-week North American tour. It will kick off February 22 in New York City. Rough Trade Records will release a single by the band – a cover of Guns and Roses’ “Sweet Child Of Mind” – on 2/19 through itunes. The single will also be available on 7” vinyl at the venues. Taken By Trees debut album Open Field was released last fall on Rough Trade Records.
Taken By Trees is Victoria Bergsman’s new project. If you don’t recognize Victoria Bergsman by name, you may recognize her utterly unique voice, as she was singer and songwriter for The Concretes for 11 years before deciding to leave the band in July 2006. You may also recognize Victoria’s voice from one of the biggest and most popular songs of last year – Peter Bjorn & John’s infectious single “Young Folks.”
On Open Field, Bergsman was aided and abetted by fellow Peter, Bjorn & John co-horts Bjorn Yttling (on various instruments and string arrangements) and John Eriksson (on all ‘very personal’ percussion instruments - marimba and vibraphone). The album also features guitar by Andreas Soderstrom, along with piano arrangements and backing vocals by Verity Susman from Electrelane. Victoria and Bjorn produced the album together.

New Film School record in September! 22 Jun 2007
Giddy Up! Our friends in Film School have delivered an amazing new album that will be out in September. Here are the details...
Hideout is Film School’s second full-length for Beggars Banquet. Written largely in Greg Bertens’ Los Angeles apartment, recorded in both LA and San Francisco studios with engineer Dan Long, mixed by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Band of Horses, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus), and produced by Bertens, Hideout builds on the band’s pretty, shoegazer pop and richly textured space-rock soundscapes by emphasizing powerful rhythms and beautiful melodies that take the songwriting to a new level. Bertens signature vocal delivery shows more breadth on this release, and evokes a plaintive longing that is magnified by the addition of female voices, courtesy of bassist Lorelei Plotcyzk and guest vocalists Tracy Uba (Timonium) and Leah Piehl. Other guest musicians loaning their talents to the album are Colm O’Ciosoig and Paul Wilson.
Film School’s 2006 self-titled debut for the label earned accolades across the country and across the pond. The band scored coveted opening slots for The National and the Rogers Sisters all over Europe before headlining their own tour of the states. But in the middle of that tour, frontman Greg Bertens got jumped outside a club in Columbus, Ohio; then in Philadelphia, somebody stole the tour van, plowing straight through the security gate of the motel parking lot, with all the band’s equipment inside. Once back home, the stress of a demanding show schedule, the ups and downs of a trying year, and emerging creative differences among bandmates ended with the decision to move forward with a change in personnel, and Film School looking to a fresh beginning with a new album.
Film School is Greg Bertens (vocals, guitar), Dave Dupuis (guitar), Lorelei Plotczyk (bass, vocals), Jason Ruck (keyboards) and James Smith (drums).
