Here’s hoping you had a fabulous Record Store Day. Here’s doubly hoping that you scored the Beggars exclusives you so desperately wanted.
We had some killer exclusives and instores on each coast and as the reports roll in from around the country it is pretty apparent that the Beggars Group titles were among the most sought after of the day.
Between our Camera Obscura and Elvis Perkins in Dearland 7″s and Arthur Russell’s ‘Love Is Overtaking Me’ LP, how could we not get excited??
Most stores had banner days, commonly doubling previous sales records with many of the Beggars RSD titles selling out within an hour or so of many stores opening.
Record Store Day was such a success that so far that the mayors of New York and Denver have declared April 18 Annual Record Store Day. Which is weird cause we thought every day was Record Store Day. Hmm.
So thanks to all who made it out and picked up something.
Oh hey, I hear tomorrow’s record store day, too. Go get something special.
Record Store Day, oh fabulous Record Store Day.
You just keep on giving, don’t you?
As if all the exclusive goodies we’re giving you weren’t enough, now you’ll have a chance to see two Beggars artists live and instore…cause, you know, rockers love record stores too!!!
Jersey-bred wunderkids Titus Andronicus will be tearing down the walls (sonically, of course) at their hometown record store Vintage Vinyl while, nearly 3,000 miles away, Anni Rossi will be playing a super intimate set at Streetlight in San Francisco. If you’re fast … or have one of those corporate jets we keep hearing so much about … you might just catch both. How daring are you, sir??

File under “Department of Last Minute”, but if you’re in LA or willing to drive or not going to Coachella, you can go see the Friendly Fires tape an episode of Carson Daly tomorrow night (Wednesday, April 15). Click on the big image below for full details.
Fresh off winning the British equivalent of a PLUG Award and directly after sending the entire US staff a scathing email for not getting Pitchfork to give The XX’s new jam “Crystalised” a 10 out of 10, Caius files this report:
so we won the best independent label award at the music WEAK awards. (worst food ever / best air conditioning ever). someone smashed our award up, scratched ‘cock’ into it and then dropped it into a bucket of champagne. its all left me feeling pretty roughed up. so here, in tenuous connection, is my hip hop youtube picks. enjoy.
1. tim dog – fuck compton names don’t get better than tim dog
diss tracks don’t get better than fuck compton
RARELY does anything reach these levels of all round incredible
LA got told:
2. public enemy – shut em down classic joint by one of the best.
video captures all of the energy/anger that the song/band always did
however if you want the real shit check out the pete rock remix:
3. kmd – peach fuzz not my favourite kmd song, but still brilliant.
this is mf doom back when he was zev love x and he didn’t hide behind a mask
BIG nose piercing and bigger flow.
RIP subroc
(if you want my favourite, videoless kmd tune check:)
4. brand nubian – punks jump up ignore the homophobia (sorry…) ignore the fact that grand puba (the king) left the group and ignore the fact that in god we trust wasn’t as good as one for all, this is their best single and a huge single.
5. main source - main source are probably best known for giving nas his first verse (live at the bbq on their classic debut breaking atoms) but they are also responsible for serious serious seriously good music. i would put up live at the bbq but nas kind of kills them on it, so here is a big track off that debut:
It’s been a great week 1 with the contest. All you people with nothing better to do than LP3-ize skateboards, frisbees and AKs, we are very proud of you.
