People around the office know that I’m on a massive anti-marketing kick. It’s not that I don’t like marketing. I mean I actually watch that Feist / iPod Nano commercial on my DVR every time. But, think about the good people. Good people who might not care about all the stuffery of marketing. And sometimes that marketing shit (our shit included) is confusing and hurts the good people. So, it’s with much zeal that I dove into all those leaked Media Defender emails last week – a company many labels use to track online music piracy.
Besides the terabytes of irony that is Media Defender’s entire email server being leaked on to the Internet, after reading a bunch of them I hardly gave it more than a "wow, that’s a bummer for someone." Sure, the CEO "prefers" beastiality to say, cream corn play, and some emails grossly pervert the whole process of copyright protection into some Dilbertian marketing intel thinger, but…again…whatever.
But, my indifference wore thin because a tipster sent an email with this little excerpt:
Blonde Redhead album comes out in a few weeks. this is an indie band…no presence outside of online geeks like me. interesting to see what kind of traction they might be getting.
- (ed: a dude we know)
Further down:
Could u have these artists entered into our marketing intel system? Thanks.
- R
We’re obviously flattered that someone who knows more about marketing than we do is tracking our bands on P2P to "create some intel" for the W.O.M. on the next Modest Mouse record. But I do feel compelled to comment on this. (keep in mind…I care more that the dudes in the email exchange above prefer Fat Burger to the vastly superior In-And-Out).
So…Blonde Redhead. Indie? Probably, if I knew what that meant. No presence? More likely, but fuck if we didn’t try on ‘23‘. And geeks…? Absolutely, and let’s just hope we, the good people, all stay that way.
